(2 Customer Reviews)
It's hard to keep up with George Clinton's P-Funk mob. From the late 1960s through the early '80s (though the band continued in different incarnations well into the 2000s), Clinton's visionary, family-style amalgam of musicians recorded under different names (Funkadelic, Parliament, Bootsy's Rubber Band), but remained true to a tirelessly funky ethos. Parliament, the most commerically successful branch of the P-Funk empire, specialized in highly polished party jams that lacked the grit and grunge of Funkadelic's acid-rock freakouts. In the '70s, Parliament turned out some of the most unique and memorable dance music of that (or any) era.
Since Parliament's studio albums were sometimes uneven, GOLD provides a fine service by bringing together their best material on two discs. Disc One kicks off with the group's first two singles, 1974's "Up for the Down Stroke" and "Testify"--both of which hold up remarkably--and continues through highlights from Parliament's masterpiece, MOTHERSHIP CONNECTION, and its follow-up, THE CLONES OF DR. FUNKENSTEIN. Disc Two contains "Bop Gun (Endangered Species)" and the 12-inch version of "Flash Light," one of the most complex and booty-moving funk compositions ever, before delving into the disco-inflected material from the turn of the decade. Along with the two-disc TEAR THE ROOF OFF (1974-1980), GOLD is the best one-stop purchase for an overview of these funk monsters.
Parliament: Bootsy Collins (vocals, guitar, bass instrument, drums); Eddie Hazel (vocals, guitar); George Clinton (vocals); Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker (horns); Bernie Worrell (keyboards, synthesizer); Dennis Chambers (drums); Philippe Wynne (background vocals).
Liner Note Author: Greg Tate.

Gold album
$8.69 Recorded between 1970 and 1980. Includes liner notes by Alan Leeds and William "Bootsy" Collins.
All songs written or co-written by William Collins or George Clinton.
William "Bootsy" Collins's monstrous and elastic bass sound is one of the defining ingredients of funk. After making pivotal recordings with James Brown and George Clinton's Parliament-Funkadelic, respectively, Collins launched a successful solo career that built on his outrageous stage persona and the otherworldly, deep funk he helped originate with Clinton. ...

Gold album
$6.55 Includes liner notes by Tom Vickers (former P-Funk Minister Of Imformation).
Parliament was one arm in George Clinton's funk army during the 70s, a large conglomeration of groups and musicians (including Bootsy's Rubber Band, Funkadelic, The Horny Horns and others) dedicated to rewriting the rules of funk, soul and rock. Clinton's bands sounded like James Brown gone mad, partly because of the inclusion of former JB sidemen Bootsy Collins, Maceo Parker ...

$12.69 This CD has been seven years in the making. That is, the learning curve has been that long. Not that it's over yet. Sweat had a lot to do with it, but also serendipity - what a word - had something to do with it, too. Ever since good old Teddy, my dog, was 8 months, our walks have taken us past this house down the street from where I live. I jog past it countless times to catch the bus at the end of the street. But I never really thought much about it until I found it was home to a fellow musician - percussionist Adam David. Who was to know that musically we would compliment each other so well? Serendipity. It's the only word for it.I wanted an "open concept" drumming style. What that really means is that I wanted a drummer who was able to read my mind!!! Adam came darned close. Our BiosAlan Darragh, a young poet, composer ...
