Since Jude Johnstone writes and sings her own songs, it would be fairly easy to peg her as a typical singer/songwriter. But her soulful vocals and knack for writing down-to-earth lyrics seems to reach beyond the typical with On a Good Day. Johnstone never really belts out the words like Bonnie Raitt or Tony Price, but she delivers songs like the title track and "Deep Water" in a slow, Southern groove that recalls both singers. The languid pace allows her to wrap her voice around a song like "Old and Gray," bringing an emotional depth to the tender lyric. The piano-violin-bass-drum arrangements provide spare but resonant backing, allowing Johnstone plenty of cushion to sing against, while a series of backup vocalists add nice touches here and there. All of these elements work together to bring out the best in each song. It also helps that Johnstone's lyrics are never pretentious or overly "deep" and vague. Story songs like "Evelyn" actually tell a story, while the soulful "Hold On" works as a simple ode to the human spirit. While it might have been nice if McDonnell had included more up-tempo songs, On a Good Day is nonetheless a nicely made album, filled with well-sung songs. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.
Personnel: Jude Johnstone (vocals, piano); Jackson Browne, Julie Miller, Rodney Crowell, Bonnie Raitt (vocals); Charles Duncan (guitar, organ); Mary Ramsey (viola); Bob Liepman (cello); Kevin McCormick (bass guitar); Mauricio-Fritz Lewak (drums).
Jude Johnstone On A Good Day Songs On A Good Day Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) a real jewel Jude's first cd was a hard act to follow--given it was filled with great songs which had already become famous from the cover performances of other singers. It was great for many reasons--especially to hear her take on songs we thought we knew. But, this new collection is magnificent. Just one great song after another. It would be a surprise and an injustice if several aren't taken up by others in additional cover performances.
First, her instrumentalists. Jude accompanies herself with piano on virtually every song--recalling the noble tradition of the singer/songwriter performing from the piano. She knows just how to accompany herself and does it beautifully. Mary Ramsay's violin and viola are superb. Didn't she do the same for Patty Loveless? Co-producer Charles Duncan acquits himself finely on guitar, organ, slide guitar, bass and poignantly on pennywhistle. He also does some backing vocals, along with an amazingly talented group of others--most especially Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Rodney Crowell and Julie Miller. Jude certainly knows how to use these voices to particular advantage in each song.
What can I say about the songs? They are all good, many are great...from the fine title tune which opens the cd to the amazing simple chorus of "Hold On," the sad and lovely "In This House," the poetic and image-filled "Old and Gray" (sung with Julie Miller), "Evelyn"--a wonderful, autobiographical song, the plaintive yet somehow hopeful "Pen and Paper," the sharp imagery and moving chorus of "Deep Water," the painful dilemma expressed so well in "Long Way Back," and the final song--a stellar, lovely tribute to a lost comrade--"The Hereafter" (with an amazing pennywhistle being played). It's a grand, impressive collection. What's amazing, as well, is how Jude--with a dusty, low, narrow-range of a voice--can sing so well and so rightly the emotions expressed in these songs. She's terrific.
In spite of the darkness and sadness in many of these songs, Jude finds reason for light and hope in many of them. I hope the talented Lori McKenna is listening and can find similar light and hope in future songs. She didn't in those on BITTERTOWN.

On A Good Day album
$9.39 This singer/songwriter has a lot of friends, but with such a wide array of talent lending backing vocals to her album, Jude Johnstone is worthy of such collaborations. The lovely acoustic alt country "Cry Wolf" could be a calmer version of a Lucinda Williams track; others of the female folk elite, such as Shawn Colvin, or one with an Americana flair à la Stacey Earle would be wise to enjoy this fine opener. The only minor problems might be an extra half-minute, which is needless. Johnstone's ...

"Teenage angst has paid off well," growls Kurt Cobain on IN UTERO's opening fusilade, "Serve The Servants," suggesting that perhaps success has spoiled Nirvana. Not! IN UTERO is a howling, defiantly punkish recording, an unsentimental throwback to an era of garage band epiphanies and raw, unadorned rock and roll. On IN UTERO, Nirvana rails against both "alternative" conformity and polished notions of commercial rock with the ...

| | Ike Reilly We Belong To The Staggering Evening CD (2007)
On A Good Day CD music
$12.19 Long seen as a folky Americana styled act, Ike Reilly and his crew return to their true roots, the talking blues and R&B that, from the sound of We Belong to the Staggering Evening, was the soul of their music all along. Can I get a witness? You bet I can, the rollicking "8 More Days Till the 4th of July" is first to testify, sending everyone in the revival tent into a frenzy with its storming R&B arrangement, blistering guitar riffs, barrelling piano and gospel-fired chorus. The band burn the house down on the album's very first track. Leaving church and heading for the pub, the group bash their way through "When Irish Eyes Are Burning," a fight song whose roundhouse style flattens everything in its path. "Fish Plant Uprising" is, if anything, more compulsive, a '50s styled rock & roller that boasts ferocious piano work and possibly the best lyric on the set -- "Who says you can't toss a fish at a president, say sorry and be on your way?" That lyric's not as surreal as its sounds, as Reilly vividly describes the rising militancy of a company town about to lose its factory. "I Hear the Train" rattles right over another serious subject, sinning preachers, ...
