Personnel: Cher (vocals); Peter Cetera, Sonny Bono (vocals). 2005's Gold is basically an expanded version of 2003's The Very Best of Cher, running to 32 tracks instead of 21. It retails for about the same price, and unless you don't want the extra 11 songs, supplants that album as the best career-spanning collection on the market. And what a career she had. Starting in the mid-'60s with the girl group-styled pop of Sonny & Cher and her solo folk-rock work all the way through to the dance-pop sensation of 1999's "Believe," she has never stayed put for long and that makes for a very interesting collection. The first disc collects songs recorded with Sonny, her early folk-rock hit "All I Really Want to Do," and her solo work from the '70s, including an extended version of her 1979 disco hit "Take Me Home." The second disc combines her '80s rock babe persona and her dance diva work at the end of the century, and includes remixed versions of "Heart of Stone" and "One by One." Both discs are solid listens, though the second disc does rely a bit much on her work for Warner Bros., which is simply not as distinctive as the rest. As long as complaints are being lodged, it would have been nice to have photos in the booklet from all through her career instead of just a handful from her recent diva/mannequin phase. The lack of any real rarities or collector's items makes the disc a little dull for hardcore Cher fanatics too. Still, this is a disc that will certainly please the fans who want a sampling of her career and don't really want rarities or surprises. ~ Tim Sendra A two-disc collection that eclipses THE VERY BEST OF CHER and goes farther into the diva's career than THE WAY OF LOVE, 2005's GOLD follows Cher's studio catalog from 1965 to 2002. Proceeding in (mostly) chronological order, the compilation begins with her folk-rock/pop hits with then-husband Sonny Bono (the sunshiney "I Got You Babe" and the pleading "Baby Don't Go") and weaves through '60s and '70s singles both with and without Sonny. "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" (1971) features Cher in a more dramatic and emotive light, pointing in the direction of the deep-voiced performer's later years. The second disc presents Cher's return to recording after her '80s work as an acclaimed actress, and includes the Diane Warren-penned hits "If I Could Turn Back Time" and "Love and Understanding," as well as the later techno-tinged dance hits "Believe" and "Song for the Lonely." While THE VERY BEST OF CHER is ideal for those wanting only one disc of Cher hits, the 34-track GOLD is perfect for those seeking a more in-depth overview. Cher Gold is just that! This compilation consists of Cher's biggest hits in cronological order. With amazing artwork that is makes the cd worthy of buying for just that and the clear sound even on the older songs makes this a great compliation. The downside to this compilation is that all of the songs are easily found on other compilations with no new or rare tracks included in this 2 disk compliation. Great for those who do not have a lot of Cher cds or those who would like the older songs in higher quality. Submitted by nicholas (Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Terry Callier New Folk Sound CD (1964)
Gold
$12.35 Full title - New Folk Sound Of Terry Callier. In 1965 at the height of the folk revival, Terry Callier's debut album marked him as an important new voice. His approach to traditional material was comparable to that of other African/Americans like Paul Robeson or Josh White, but evidence of his originality can be heard on every song on this re-release, including three that are issued for the first time. Callier's guitar work was quite adventurous by folk standards, incorporating chord changes one might expect to hear in a modern jazz context. He was also a powerful vocalist with a flair for drama that could evoke Odetta at her best. Includes 3 previously unreleased bonus tracks 'Be My Woman', 'Jack O' Diamonds' & 'The Golden Apples Of The Sun.' Prestige. 2003.
