Along with Styx and REO Speedwagon, Journey ruled the charts and radio airwaves in the early '80s. And like the aforementioned bands, Journey began in the '70s, so obviously the compilers of its 1988 GREATEST HITS release had a lot of material to choose from.
Journey's sound was a merger of hard rock, compliments of guitarist Neal Schon, ...

| | Five Emprees Little Miss Sad CD (1966)
Children's Children
$13.55 The Five Emprees' sole album was a typically thrown-together effort for a mid-'60s band that had some local success, surrounding the regional hit debut single title track with its B-side; both sides of their second 45; and a bunch of cover versions. Actually every song on the LP was a cover version, save for the B-side of that second single, "Why." "Little Miss Sad" itself, a cover of an obscure Addrisi Brothers single, is pretty good pop-oriented garage rock with a foot in early-'60s pre-Beatles sounds. Unfortunately, the Five Emprees never did match it, and most of the rest of the album was filled with too-hastily recorded, thinly produced unimaginative covers of familiar songs by the likes of Chuck Berry, Roy Orbison, and the Zombies. The greater effort they were able to invest in the production and performance of their singles is evident on not only "Little Miss Sad," but also the three other tracks from their initial pair of 45s, "Hey Lover," "Hey Baby," and "Why." There's a glimmer of promise in those sides, which are likable if modest poppy garage, but it's not enough to make the album too interesting overall. ~ Richie Unterberger

| | Field Mice For Keeps + Singles CD (1991) Remastered
Children's Children
$14.15 For Keeps + Singles runs for 74 minutes, features 15 remastered tracks, and contains detailed biographical notes in the booklet. The new artwork is by German designer Stefan Kassel. LTM. 2005.
What turned out to be the only full studio album the Field Mice released was also nothing less than a quietly triumphant masterpiece. Building on the strength of its string of great singles while keeping its own particular character and mood, For Keeps -- a sly and sharp title, given how many of the band's songs reflected both love's creation and dissolution -- found the five piece full of gently impassioned creativity. It could be the subtle funk wah-wah guitars on the opening "Five Moments" or the blissout psych droning of "Tilting ...
| | Stacey Earle S&M Communion Bread CD (2005)
Children's Children
$11.69 Clearly a title like S&M Communion Bread by Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart is meant to raise eyebrows and perhaps incite a chuckle or two. But by the album's first song, "Up in Annie's Room," all the humor is gone. As visitors climb Annie's stairs all night and the chandeliers shake, the young narrator knows that something isn't quite right. The dark mood hardly lifts on "The Old Watch," a song that revolves around the gift of a watch by a friend who has left to fight in a war. This is an antiwar song, though in a very subtle way, and while it's not specifically aimed at the current U.S. war in Iraq, it isn't hard to infer the lyric's disapproval. In just a few songs, then, S&M Communion Bread paints a rather bleak portrait of the world, so it's something of a relief with Earle sings lead on "Are You Ready?," a somewhat melancholy lyric saved by nifty guitar work and a nice, jazzy riff. Both Earle and Stuart are fine lead singers (though she sings most of the leads), with her voice ranging from light to terse, and his more country. Together on the choruses, the pair creates a lovely blend that adds another emotional layer to each song. S&M Communion Bread ends with a true a cappella duet on the traditional "The Old Gospel Ship," a fitting end to an engaging, though occasionally dark, album. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.
Stacey Earle, sister of country maverick Steve Earle, and husband Mark Stuart have put together a collection of songs that nourish the soul through the ear. Sweet harmonies and vocals, straightforward lyrics and soulful themes are the tools the songcrafters used to build these sturdy acoustic folk/gospel/country gems. After playing and writing songs ...
