| | Fairport Convention Chronicles CD - Import Fairport Convention Discography of CDs
This two-disc U.K. collection from 2005 features 34 classic tracks culled from material recorded between the British folk-rock legend's 1968 eponymous debut and 1975's Rising for the Moon. Listeners looking for a solid entry point into the world of Fairport Convention will find that Chronicles more than suffices, as it relies a great deal on the group's most beloved lineup featuring Richard Thompson and Sandy Denny. However, 1999's Meet on the Ledge: The Classic Years (1967-1975) is as good if not better than Chronicles, and is far easier to locate. [Chronicles was reissued in 2008 as Gold on Island records.] ~ James Christopher Monger
Fairport Convention, long acknowledged as the inventors and flame-keepers of British folk-rock, have struggled through tragedy and numerous line-up changes. This 34-track 2 CD set taps into their rich legacy beginning with their debut album, 'Fairport Convention' (1968), for Polydor right up to their final album for Island Records, 'Rising for the Moon' (1975). Universal. 2005.

Chronicles album
$14.38 Glitter and Doom Live, a double-disc set, marks Tom Waits' third live effort in his nearly 40-year career, each one summing up his career to the point of its release. The first, Nighthawks at the Diner issued in 1975 on Asylum, is regarded by many as one of the greatest live albums of all time. The second was Big Time, released during his tenure at Island in 1986. The musical performances on disc one of Glitter and Doom Live were culled from Waits' historic sold-out tour of the U.S. and Europe. He compiled and sequenced the set himself, ...

KC's debut album introduced to the world a group that threw various '60s genres into a blender and set the results afire with a blowtorch. One of the pioneers of the progressive rock movement that began in the late '60s and flourished in the early '70s, King Crimson was arguably the most consistently creative band in the genre. On IN THE COURT they blend wispy, Donovan-ish folk-rock with Wagnerian grandeur, mind-bending heavy rock, and even a free- jazz sensibility. Greg Lake's vocals are effectively theatrical but more restrained than in his later ELP work. Robert Fripp was just learning how to make mincemeat of a chord progression, but he's alternately lyrical and frenetic as ...
| | Rod Stewart Never A Dull Moment (Gold) CD (1972) Gold
Chronicles album
$19.10 NEVER A DULL MOMENT picks up where EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY left off. Here we have more raucous rock & roll with healthy dollops of soul and twang thrown in for good measure. Always looking for a good songwriter to cover, Stewart's honorees here include Jimi Hendrix ("Angel"), Dylan ("Mama You Been On My Mind"), and Rod's personal hero, Sam Cooke ("Twistin' The Night Away"). Sidling up nicely next to these heartfelt interpretations are some of Stewart's finest original songs. Teaming ...

Chronicles songs
$12.79 The young Belgian singer Kate Ryan is being marketed as a slice of generic trance-diva cheesecake (this package contains no fewer than 12 separate photos of her in various states of undress), but she is in fact a woman of considerable talent who sings with power and authority and who writes much of her own music. As a lyricist, she's quite a bit more convincing in her native French than in English (sample couplet: "Our love was stronger than the ...
| | Antony & The Johnsons CD (2000)
Chronicles album
$12.19 Antony & the Johnsons have put together an elaborate assortment of artsy, sweet, and odd songs on their debut album. Antony's voice is a stunning musical instrument, sounding as feminine as it does masculine. Occasionally, he pulls out all the stops and affects a successful, soaring vocal style. The atmosphere of the album is dark yet somehow uplifting. The music, mostly slow, quiet jazz, played on a piano, harp, cello, flute, clarinets, saxophone, violins, and drums (in addition to some guitar work) occasionally matches Antony's bombastic vocals. Song titles like "Cripple and the Starfish," "Hitler in My Heart," and "The Atrocities" give an idea of the tone. "Hitler in My Heart" sees Antony searching for a "piece of kindness" but finding Hitler in his heart, before relating that "from the corpses, flowers grow." No matter what those lyrics suggest, the song itself begins as a playful, spooky ...
