Ultimate Darkness album
$21.00 Comprised of 18 tracks culled from the singer/composer's first three decades, The Very Best of Enya was pieced together by the artist herself, along with longtime collaborators Nicky and Roma Ryan. Luckily, the trio seems enamored by most of the same songs that the general public is, resulting in one of those rare "greatest-hits" collections that goes deep without depriving the listener of the essentials. With tunes like "Orinoco Flow," "Caribbean Blue," and "Book of Days" in the pot and out of the way, it's easier to appreciate hidden gems like "Cursum Perficio," "Boadicea," "Trains and Winter Rains," and "Anywhere Is." Also notable is the inclusion of "May It Be" and a previously unreleased version of "Aníron (I Desire)," both of which originally appeared on the soundtrack for the first chapter of Peter Jackson's beloved Lord of the Rings trilogy. ~ James Christopher Monger

| | Throwdown Deathless CD (2009)
Ultimate Darkness album
$12.99 Throwdown have had to eat a lot of crap in recent years because their vocalist, Dave Peters, is doing such a blatant, idolatrous imitation of Pantera/Down vocalist Phil Anselmo. It doesn't help that with 2005's Vendetta they shifted from the thick-necked, straight-edge hardcore of their early catalog to a version of the "groove metal" practiced by Pantera, Trivium, and other modern metal bands. On this latest album, though, Peters occasionally shifts from imitating Anselmo to imitating Anselmo-imitating- Mudvayne's Chad Gray. The music, too, has a lot of Mudvayne's combination of groove and progressive epic-ness, coupled with Pantera's ...
| | Stryper Yellow And Black Attack CD (1984)
Ultimate Darkness CD music
$8.49 When church leaders were accusing heavy metal of encouraging Satanism, Stryper set out to prove that metal and hard rock could be used to promote Christianity. The southern California band was viewed with suspicion by both ministers (who refused to believe that Christianity and metal were compatible) and fellow headbangers -- and yet, Stryper managed to sell millions of albums to both Christian and secular audiences. Stryper's first release, The Yellow and Black Attack!, showed the rockers ...
| | Joe Zawinul Zawinul CD (1971)
Ultimate Darkness music CDs
$11.65 Conceptually, sonically, this is really the first Weather Report album in all but name, confirming that Joe Zawinul was the primary creative engine behind the group from the beginning. It is also the link between WR and Miles Davis' keyboard-laden experiments on In a Silent Way; indeed, the tune "In a Silent Way" is redone in the more complex form in which Zawinul envisioned it, and Miles even contributes a brief, generous tribute to Zawinul on the liner. Two keyboardists -- Zawinul and the formidable Herbie Hancock -- form the underpinning ...
| | 100% Azucar!: The Best Of Celia Cruz Con La Sonora Matancera CD (1997)
Ultimate Darkness songs
$9.09 Celia Cruz Con La Sonora Matancera: Celia Cruz (vocals); Rogelio Martinez (tres); Calizto Leicea, Pedro Knight (trumpet); Lino Frias (piano); Elpidio Vazquez (bass); Jose Rosario Chavez "Manteca" (timbales); Carlos M. Diaz "Caito" (maracas, background vocals); Angel Alfonso Furias (tumbadora); Bienvenido Granda, Celio Gonzalea, Laito Sureda (background vocals).
100% AZUCAR culls classic performances by the Queen of Salsa and her original band from the years before and just after the Cuban revolution of 1959. Titled after Celia's patented soul-shout ("azucar!"), this collection evokes a romantic, somehow more innocent ...

| | Queensryche Operation: Mindcrime CDs (1988) Bonus DVD; Deluxe Edition
Ultimate Darkness music CDs
$25.69 The album that preceded this release, RAGE FOR ORDER, came as a surprise to some fans because of the group's appropriation of electronic sound-generating techniques. Undeterred, the band composed its most challenging work yet, the epic concept album OPERATION: MINDCRIME. Originally issued in 1988, the hard-edged album slowly worked its way up the charts and became the band's first gold-certified release (an opening slot on Def Leppard's sold-out HYSTERIA tour certainly didn't hurt, either). The story-line centers on a drug addict who falls in love with a former prostitute turned nun. Together, they uncover a dangerous underground movement and try to stop it before it's too late.
This 2CD/DVD set includes a DVD of Video:mindcrime with 9 clips and 2 bonus clips previously unreleased on the making of the video and TV spot. The CDs include the original album plus 2 tracks and a previously unreleased live concert at the Hammersmith Odeon, London, England, November 15th, 1990.
Recorded at Kajem/Victory Studios, Gladwyne, Pennsylvania. Includes liner notes by Paul Suter.
Queensrÿche: Geoff Tate (vocals, whistle, keyboards); Chris DeGarmo (acoustic 6-string guitar, acoustic 12-string guitar, electric guitar, lap steel guitar, guitar synthesizer); Michael Wilton (acoustic 6-string ...
| | Rough Guide To The Music Of Iran CD (2006) (Import) United Kingdom
Ultimate Darkness songs
$12.89 It's virtually impossible to consider the state of contemporary Iranian music without taking into account the country's contentious political relationship with the rest of the world. As compiler Simon Broughton acknowledges at the outset of his liner notes, the images of Iran received on the outside, particularly in the West, tend to give an impression that this complex country is populated entirely by religious zealots who would suppress any creative expression. Compounding that false notion is that not much indigenous Iranian music has been allowed to escape, to be heard and appreciated in the West. Not surprisingly though, Iran, both in its cosmopolitan city of Tehran and throughout the rest of the country, hosts a diverse range of traditional and modern artists, as well as many who fuse the two into a new whole. As all of the other entries in the Rough Guide series so admirably do, this 15-track collection of album tracks and previously unreleased field recordings, ancient and modern sounds alike, serves as a fascinating introduction to the breadth of Iran's musical landscape. Never is that diversity clearer than in the transition from Chengis Mehdipour's "Misri Koroglu" to Barad's "Dar Har Rage Man (Within Each of My Veins)." The former is a mesmerizing traditional piece, featuring an instrument from the lute family called the korpuz. In a raga-like way, it lures and builds in intensity, before giving way to Barad's track, an all-out ...
