Personnel: Toots Thielemans (harmonica); Fred Hersh (piano); Marc Johnson (bass); Joey Baron (drums). Recorded live in Belgium in 1986. Includes liner notes by Toots Thielemans and Folon. Personnel: Fred Hersch (piano); Marc Johnson (bass instrument); Joey Baron (drums). This 1986 concert by harmonica master Toots Thielemans in his hometown of Brussels, Belgium is one of the hidden gems in his vast discography. On Do Not Leave Me, he is accompanied by a superb rhythm section consisting of lyrical pianist Fred Hersch, gifted bassist Marc Johnson, and tasteful drummer Joey Baron. The trio starts a long Miles Davis medley with a brief interpretation of "Blue in Green," with the leader making a delayed entrance before launching into a lengthy exploration of "All Blues." Thielemans' brilliant effort in finding new ways to approach "Stardust" is amazing, while "Autumn Leaves" mixes waltz lines with an explosive character at times. Thielemans switches to guitar for his signature tune "Bluesette," in which the audience cheerfully whistles along with the group for a time before the famous whistler himself takes over. Unfortunately, this 2005 Milan edition still has some of the packaging problems of earlier versions, misspelling one song title and a composer's name, while completely omitting the presence of "All Blues." In any case, the music on this live CD will be of great interest to anyone who enjoys Toots Thielemans. ~ Ken Dryden Though associated with bebop and studio work, the remarkable harmonica player Toots Thielemans has always been a very flexible player. Accompanied by a modern rhythm section comprised of pianist Fred Hersch, bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joey Baron, Thielemans performs the romantic "Do Not Leave Me," a 19«-minute exploration of "Blue and Green" and "All Blues," a concise "Stardust," "Autumn Leaves," Ivan Lins' "Velas" and Toots' biggest hit "Bluesette" which features the enthusiastic audience whistling along. More than a decade later, this joyful set still sounds fresh; fortunately the music is readily available on CD. ~ Scott Yanow

Liner Note Author: John F. Szwed. Illustrator: Steve Mannion. The 13 performances on this 1998 CD sampler feature a variety of the top jazz organists of the previous 40 years on selections (all easily available elsewhere) leased from Telarc, Fantasy, Sony, Polygram, Blue Note and Minor Music. Although the music is reasonably enjoyable, the poor documentation (no personnel listing or dates) is inexcusable. If one wonders who a particular guitar or saxophone soloist might be, they can keep on wondering or do their own research. Obviously, this release is primarily for the casual listener who simply desires some grooving background music. Heard from are Jimmy McGriff (teaming up with altoist Hank Crawford), ...

Engineers include: John X, Ray Dobbins, Gary Dobbins. DOGS FROM THE HARE THAT BIT US is an all-covers album. The Dickies: Leonard G. Phillips (vocals, keyboards); Rick Dasher (vocals, bass); Stan Lee, Little Dave Teague (guitar); Travis Johnson (drums). Additional Personnel: Glen Laughlin (vocals, 12-string guitar); John X (harmonica); Mark Mylar (keyboards). An eight-song, all-covers Dickies mini-LP? Why not! Remember these zany punks' terrific covers of "Nights in White Satin" (a classic even if you hate the Moody Blues), Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" (which basically inspired the Bad Brains to form!), and the cartoon themes to "Banana Splits" and "Gigantor"? In an era where everyone hated covers bands, the Dickies were the obvious exception, reinventing a bizarre array of choices with both furious intensity and hilarious humor. As it happens, Dogs from the Hare is not of the caliber of the great moments listed above, ...
