This exceptional date by Dave Holland Big Band was recorded in 2002 in New York, yet remained unreleased until 2005. As is to be expected, Holland assembled a fine cast of seasoned and young players, some of whom are veterans of Holland's quintets and quartets. These are four saxophones -- two alto, tenor and baritone -- three trumpets and trombones, and vibes as well as bass and drums. They include Chris Potter and Robin and Duane Eubanks, Antonio Hart, Steve Nelson, Josh Roseman, Billy Kilson, Taylor Haskins, Gary Smulyan, Jonathan Arons and Alex Sipiagin. The music centers around the opening four-part "Monterey Suite," a tour de force commissioned by the Monterey Jazz Festival and originally performed there in 2001. Holland's writing for the trombone section is dynamite. Roseman, Arons, and Robin Eubanks offer up solid bottom rung lines and tight timing as anchors for the rest of the brass though they often charge out front. ...

Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). With his second album as a leader, 1959's TOMORROW IS THE QUESTION!, Ornette Coleman had not quite made all the necessary adjustments that would introduce his classic period. However, enough changes had been made to make it clear that the alto saxophonist -- contrary to his detractors' sneers--had a specific sound he was aiming toward, and a clear idea of how to get there. The biggest change between this album and Coleman's 1958 debut is the lack of a pianist, which puts the melodic emphasis solely on Coleman's sax and Don Cherry's trumpet. Coleman and Cherry are in remarkable sync throughout; indeed, "Rejoicing" features several passages of the pair playing in unison, and two of the album's most harmonically fearless and rhythmically loose solos are Cherry's spotlights in "Giggin'" and "Endless." ...

An early release by San Francisco's free jazz-meets-modern classical Rova Saxophone Quartet, As Was finds the group branching into a variety of stylistic areas but keeping their free jazz roots firmly at the base of their music. (Imagine four Anthony Braxtons in a frisky and experimental mood.) The set starts with the brief "Daredevils," a playful blast of honk-blat-phwee that co-founder Larry Ochs describes in the liner notes as "a little hit of the circus." The mood turns superficially more serious on "Quill," an exploration for soprano saxophone with an intriguing call-and-response structure. "Under the Street Where You Live" returns to the cacophony of the opener, with a few Albert Ayler-style solos unspooling over a main theme that honestly resembles a herd of angry geese at times. The expansive 20-minute closer, "Paint Another Take of the Shootpop," is dedicated to Olivier Messiaen and Otis Redding, and impressively enough, elements of both can be heard in the way passages of musique concrete alternate with R&B-inspired improvisations that almost sound, dare ...
