Almost uniquely within their generation, New York City's Immolation continue to battle against the constraints of their extreme genre, and have helped maintain exciting, inventive, and ever-evolving American death metal throughout the mid-2000s. Even without altering their basic, authentically brutal sound all that much from album to album, Immolation refuse to hide conveniently behind unfathomable depths of cavernous riffing and sub-guttural vocals to make up for a lack of what people in the know call "songwriting talent." No sir, for you see Immolation possess that increasingly rare talent, and some might correctly argue that "Swarm of Terror" -- the excellent first track from their sixth album, 2005's Harnessing Ruin -- accomplishes more for the state of American-bred death metal on its own than entire legions of contenders and pretenders as of late. Seriously, it's difficult to resist hyperbole or contain one's enthusiasm before the sheer harmonic density and dynamic variety displayed by instantly memorable offerings like the above, "Our Savior Sleeps," and "Challenge the Storm," which effortlessly swing from full-on onslaughts to slow-riffing, dread-inducing passages. The mid-album pairing of "Son of Iniquity" and "My Own Enemy" loses a few points for dragging things out just a tad beyond expected, but hardly detract from additional winners like the title track, "Crown the Liar," "At Mourning's Twilight," and the particularly stunning "Dead to Me" -- all of them encouraging aggressive catharsis through their inexorable riffing, evil-sounding melodies, and -- occasionally -- even unexpected use of black metal synthesizers. All told, these nine songs constitute an embarrassment of riches, and deliver a much-needed shot in the arm for the American death metal scene. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Immolation Harnessing Ruin Songs Harnessing Ruin Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Masterpiece, no less, no more I just don't understand why some mind closed death metallers say this album does not deserve any attention. yes, this MASTERPIECE (in capital letters) is not so brutal as unholy cult or close to a world below, but this is the Immolation´s album with the darkest (and the best, of course) atmposphere, every song evolves you with a dense but merciless halo of darkness and mystery. and the lyrics are also very interesting. What can I say...another Immolation album, so , another (very) great album, refuse this masterpiece and consider you a "true brutal deathmetaller" (and I don´t mean I hate brutal death metallers, because I am one of them!), or buy it and let your senses to fly above the flames of hell... BUY IT ! Immolation isn't the fastest or heaviest or most technical DM band, but they can create amazing dark, gloomy atmosphere - and it's a proof that they are good composers. In my opinion Immolation is one of the best and original DM bands out there, and "harnessing ruin" is their most complete effort ! Submitted by Gniewo (Czaplinek, Polska) Was This Review Helpful? Very good I agree with the other reviews. It isn't quite as dark and gloomy as previous Immolation albums, but certainly Does have it's moments, and gloomy riffs, which you will feel like you could revel in for hours instead of seconds. Their slight change in sound is NOT a sell-out or problem however. This is worth your 15 bucks or so, close to an hour of hardcore serious death metal, not for children. I still prefer "Here in after" but this is overall a HELL of a good album, along with "close to a world below" these guys are awesome, buy it... $10.75 This is the remastered digi version of the Immolation cult debut "Dawn of Possession". Harnessing Ruin
$11.39 Possibly the biggest band to be set adrift after the unfortunate bankruptcy of the great Man's Ruin label (R.I.P.), stoner rock mainstay Alabama Thunderpussy was, not surprisingly, also one of the first to find a new home. In fact, both the band and their as yet unnamed fourth album were quickly snapped up by astute Relapse Records, who, keen to expand their roster beyond its extreme metal boundaries, knew a good deal ...

Harnessing Ruin
$13.95 Mere months after its release, Jay-Z pared down his platinum-selling BLUEPRINT 2: THE GIFT AND THE CURSE to fit on one disc featuring his most solid material. While the original Part 2 of BLUEPRINT was hardly rife with filler (and impressive in that lack), when the strongest tracks are culled an even more powerful, sharper record emerges. Jay-Z still leads off with the provocative "A Dream" which not only features a mock discussion with Biggie Smalls during which the late rapper approves Jay-Z's skills, but directly samples a bit from the legend's hit "Juicy." Of course "Bonnie & Clyde '03," the ubiquitous hit-single duet with Beyonce Knowles, shows up a few tracks later. Then the listener benefits from not having to switch discs and wait for easily the most stunning track, "Guns & Roses," ...

Harnessing Ruin
$12.79 Robyn's self-titled record marks the Swedish pop singer's remarkable return to international attention roughly 11 years following her gigantic hit, "Show Me Love." Released in 2005 in Sweden, the exquisitely crafted pop record slowly gained momentum through an unexpected abundance of critical praise and a flurry of singles. By 2007, ROBYN earned distribution around the globe. As with Pink and Kylie Minogue, there is something deeper and darker going on beneath the sheen of dance-pop on the diverse ROBYN. Singles like "With ...
