From classical cover band devoted exclusively to performing Metallica's symphony-friendly epics to all purpose string ensemble interpreters of other heavy metal bands' music for the cello, to composers of original material fit to mingle with even more metallic translations, Finland's Apocalyptica had come a long way in the span of their first three albums. And, naturally, there were bound to be further innovations lined up for the band's fourth opus, Reflections, which arrived in 2003 bearing not a single heavy metal cover, and introducing several unexpected innovations into Apocalyptica's m.o., to boot. Chief among these was the addition of a drummer behind the group (recently paired down from quartet to trio), and since Apocalyptica's virtuosos would hardly stand for anything short of brilliance for such an assignment, that percussionist wound up being none other than Slayer legend Dave Lombardo, on whose Grip Inc. albums, group leader Eicca Toppinen had conveniently performed as well. One of those rare rock drummers whose sound and style is instantly recognizable, Lombardo was more than up to the task, providing the necessary flailing-limbs thrust behind dramatically driving originals like "Prologue (Apprehension)," "Somewhere Around Nothing," and "Resurrection" (which sounds like it should have originated as a metal song, but didn't). Apocalyptica also does without him on several compositions, of course, but they keep the experimentation coming by adding a pianist for the exquisite ballad "Far Away," discreet synth effects for the multi-faceted "Cohkka," full-on drum machines for "Heat," and a Spanish horn section for "Toreador II" -- Ole! And for those fans who simply want to hear them shred, there's plenty of that throughout this set, with the suitably named "Pandemonium" offering an especially blinding display. All in all, Apocalyptica's first foray into all-original material is nothing short of triumphant, and an eye opener for rock music fans who simply came along because of the Metallica connection. Fans who remember Apocalyptica from its first two albums might have suspected that the four Finnish cellists would fade into obscurity after their stock of Metallica covers ran dry. Lee HazzardLee Hazzard was put together in order to bring that distinct sound of classic rock musicto fans of this music genre. Lee Hazzard consists of Gary Hornbeck on guitar and lead vocals, Mike Dalamore on bass guitar and lead vocals and Scott Dalamore on drums and vocals. The band was formed in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada and is currently working on the live show and will be announcing tour dates soon. Gary Hornbeck:The founding member of Lee Hazzard originally started his music career in the central Ontario region of Canada. Learning a few chords at the tender age of eleven ,Hornbeck did not have thoughts of rock and roll stardom or even playing music for a living. At the age of nineteen Hornbeck was taught a pentatonic blues scale and was fascinated. Thus began an incredible love for the guitar and music. After playing in several rock bands around Ontario, Hornbeck moved to Orlando, Florida and teamed up with Riff West, [Molly Hatchet, Foghat] to form the band “Third Degree” The highlite of that band was playing onstage with Molley Hatchet in Altamont Springs Fla. After that Hornbeck moved back to Ontario where he co founded the band Sleight of Hand, with good friend and song writing partner, D. J. Bingham, lead singer from The Ugly Ducklings, who penned the #1 hit in Canada called “Gaslight“Sleight of Hand received plenty of attention in the central Ontario region and were winners of several homegrown c.d. compilations including Q-107 in Toronto, CKPT in Peterborough and CKLY in Lindsay.After loosing band members, Hornbeck was offered a position as lead guitar with the legendary Ronnie Hawkins and with Bingham’s blessing Hornbeck jumped at the opportunity.First class, prime rib and cognac was truly the rock and roll life style, but the gigs were coming few and far between so Hornbeck ended his tenure with The Hawk which culminated in shooting the video “Days Gone By” at Levon Helm’s studio in Woodstock N.Y. “That was a great time hanging with Levon”. Ricky Danko and Garth Hudson from The Band and John Sebastion all dropped by to say hello and offer their services.
