| | Sonny Clark Dial S For Sonny CD Sonny Clark Discography of CDs
Personnel: Sonny Clark (piano); Hank Mobley (tenor saxophone); Art Farmer (trumpet); Curtis Fuller (trombone); Wilbur Ware (double bass); Louis Hayes (drums). Liner Note Author: Bob Blumenthal. Dial "S" for Sonny, Sonny Clark's first session for Blue Note Records and his first session as a leader, is a terrific set of laidback bop, highlighted by Clark's liquid, swinging solos. Clark leads a first-rate group -- Art Farmer (trumpet), Curtis Fuller (trombone), Hank Mobley (tenor sax), Wilbur Ware (bass), Louis Hayes (drums) -- through four originals and two standards, balancing the selections between swinging bop and reflective ballads. There are traces of Bud Powell in Clark's style, but he's beginning to come into his own, developing a style that's alternately edgy and charmingly relaxed. Mobley, Farmer and Fuller have their moments, but Clark steals the show in this set of fine, straight-ahead bop. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Sonny Clark Dial S For Sonny Songs | 1. | Dial S For Sonny |

| | Will Downing Classique CD (2009)
Dial S For Sonny
$14.39 Audio Mixers: Tip Wyman; Jeff Kaman; Ray Bardani. Audio Remasterer: Chris Gehringer. The title of Will Downing's 2009 effort, CLASSIQUE, produced by the artist and Rex Rideout, may be a bit misleading: it is not a compilation but a brand-spanking new collection of contemporary jazz-inflected R&B--in other words, classic Downing. The album's first single, "Something Special"--with its hand drums, loops, and slippery flute flitting around a well-placed, subtle horn section--is at its core a popping midtempo love song. Elsewhere, his cover of Barry White's "I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little Bit More Baby" reveals just how deep the master's influence is on Downing. He may not have the full depth of White's baritone, but he gets close, and his expressiveness and emotional connection to the song make it shine. The completely old-school Marvin Gaye ballad "Baby I'm for Real" features a duet appearance by Phil Perry. It's convincing and utterly gorgeous. But not only do the covers work here; Downing's originals connect too--and not just the aforementioned single, but ...
| | Fiesta Picante: The Latin Jazz Party Collection CDs (1997)
Dial S For Sonny
$8.39 Reaching all the way back to the beginnings of Concord Picante in 1979, which was originally created for the pleasure of the late Cal Tjader, Fiesta Picante traces nearly the entire history of the label in what amounts to a greatest-hits collection with a non-stop groove. While the music constantly looks backwards, with few progressive strains, the album succeeds as a summary of Picante and as an irresistible danceathon. Disc one is mostly devoted to tracks with a cha-cha or guajira beat, while disc two is dominated by the more rambunctious mambo style. One is struck by how many of Latin jazz's surviving stars have recorded for the label, often in thorough detail. Poncho Sanchez, the neo-classicist among them, gets five entries, including ...
