| | Frames Black Forest CD Frames Discography of CDs
The A-Frames' dark, art-damaged noise-rock hearkens back to the post-punk and Goth sound of bands like Wire, Bauhaus, and Killing Joke. Erin Sullivan sings in a zombie-style sing-speak, while bassist Min Yee and drummer Lars Finberg add plodding, thunderous rhythms to Sullivan's sometimes-chunky and churning, sometimes-angular and nervous guitar. Listeners playing BLACK FOREST--the band's third full-length (and Sub Pop debut)--front to back may find it difficult to resist the temptation to don black eye make-up and pogo around like the undead.
Yet the A-Frames are more than a mere retro act. Touches of electronics, and a healthy dose of avant-dance sensibility link the A-Frames to contemporary underground bands like the Liars. Additionally, the A-Frames have a delightful (if somewhat warped) command of pop hooks. The sing-song refrain of "Death Train" (which goes "Death train going on its final ride") invites listeners to chirp along ironically, while "Memoranda" is as close as the band comes to a straight-up pop single. The clashing combination of accessibility, noisy experimentalism, and fun, familiar Goth antics makes BLACK FOREST a must for fans of dark, off-kilter rock.

Spin (p.108) - "[P]acked with sparse, whirring, and danceable noise-rock refinements that any robot would be proud to blurt." Magnet (p.84) - "In Erin Sullivan's clipped shards of dissonant guitar and dispassionate vocals - plus the rhythm section's thuggish, precision crunch - you hear a clear longing for the scum rock of the pre-Nirvana era....The A Frames ultimately come off as serious students of history, not fashion." | | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Black Forest album
$11.89 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure ...
| | Frames Burn The Maps CD (2005)
Black Forest CD music
$11.35 One of Ireland's most accomplished musical exports, the Frames built a fan base at home and abroad with tireless touring and passionate albums such as 1996's FITZCARRALDO and 2001's FOR THE BIRDS. BURN THE MAPS, the Frames' 2005 debut for the Anti label, is arguably their most focused and polished effort to date. The band's simmering intensity, folk-rock leanings, and sometimes explosive, dynamic rock (which can rival Radiohead and U2 in its epic sweep) are brought to the perfect synthesis here.

Digitally remastered by Tim Young (Metropolis Mastering, London, England).
In 1986, post-disco synth-dance pop was commercially waning, with even Madonna moving towards a more conventional pop sound with her single "Live to Tell," and the real hardcore stuff was reduced to an underground that had been dubbed "Hi-NRG." That is, until the Pet Shop Boys, ex-music journalist Neil Tennant and synth player Chris Lowe, made the jump from that underground to the ...
| | Kalimba Aerosoul CD (2004)
Black Forest songs
$10.25 Kalimba Marichal Ibar's career is the stuff that pop star dreams are made of. From childhood television appearances to joining up with youth vocal pop group la Onda Vaselina (with whom he would stay for three years), this could only be foreshadowing to his inevitable debut as solo artist. Like a Mexican Justin Timberlake, this child performer turned pop group member turned club/dance bad boy leans towards the funky side. His 2004 record Aerosoul evokes memories of early Michael Jackson, with plenty of disco sensibility given a sparse hip-hop face-lift. Employing the behind-the-scenes talents of Aureo Baqueiro and Mario Domm, both Mexican pop royalty, the record has plenty of both big-budget gloss and back alley dirt. Kalimba himself gives some real soul and grit to his delivery. Still clearly on the ...

| | Crazy World Of Arthur Brown Dance CD (1974) (Import) Japan; Limited Edition
Black Forest songs
$42.05 Japanese pressing 24-bit remastered reissue packaged in a miniature LP sleeve. Air Mail Archive. 2006.
By the mid-1970s, Arthur Brown had spent some six years operating so far below the radar that many people who remembered his "Fire" chart-topper could easily be excused for thinking he'd vanished altogether. Of course, aficionados knew he'd been busy elsewhere, scouring the progressive underground with Journey and Kingdom Come, and fans of those projects were non-plussed indeed when Brown suddenly reappeared in the mainstream, turning up on the Saturday morning British TV pop program, Supersonic, to plug his latest single. Resplendent in gold wellies, Brown drew the Animals' "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" to new heights of dementia -- the single itself was ultimately a flop, but the performance was killer, and all ears were open for the album that followed, Dance. Unfortunately, they quickly closed back up again, as the LP was revealed not as the long-awaited second coming of the "God of Hell Fire", but as a lackluster mingling of, indeed, dancey rhythms and dirgey ditties, a dry, dull collection that ...
