A listen to Apocalyptica's Apocalyptica brings with it the nagging urge to figure out where, exactly, the music fits. Certain moments -- entire tracks, even -- are given over to classical formality, and it is in those moments, steeped as they are in traditional loveliness, that a listener can come dangerously close to thinking he is hearing something lofty and important. He is not. Apocalyptica, the genre-splicing Finnish instrumental band that changed headbangers' perception of the cello, is not pretentious exactly, but its effect is the same as that of a rock band whose lead singer is audibly British: it sounds smart. Too smart, for instance, to issue from the headphones of a kid just discovering Black Sabbath or lining up for Slipknot tickets. Where Apocalyptica might fit, then, is not with heavy rock scenesters but with aging metal heads. It is not hard to envision tracks like "Fatal Error" and "Fisheye" booming from the speakers of a splashy convertible with a bald guy at the wheel. Elaborate fantasy-concocting gamers -- Dungeons & Dragons players and their descendants -- also stand a better chance than most of finding relatable rock bliss here. ~ Tammy La Gorce

Apocalyptica album
$13.95 Principally recorded at Petrax Studios, Hollola, Finland. Includes liner notes by Petri Silas and Eicca Toppinen.
Fans who remember Apocalyptica from its first two albums might have suspected that the four Finnish cellists would fade into obscurity after their stock of Metallica covers ran dry. Sure, the shtick worked well while it lasted, but the irony of classically trained cellists covering heavy metal will only hold listeners' attention for so long. This is why, on their third album, they've taken some risks. The ensemble has grown to feature a double bass, orchestral percussion, and distorted cellos. Plus, they stick strickly to their own songs, and, at a time when heavy metal has gone the way of dodo birds and disco, they've refused to abandon their roots. Cult, Apocalyptica's third album, is a meld of late-'80s melodramatic heavy metal and late-1800s romanticism. When it's all said and done, these Finns can flat out play. "Struggle" opens up with eerie insect noises and then pounces into a section that sounds eerily like Sepultura. Some of the harmonies on "Pray" are so cleverly placed they can be mistaken for a human voice for the first few notes. Every song is an epic, and every song is dark and heavy. It's not old school Metallica, but it is some of the most intelligent, original heavy metal being made today. ~ Kieran McCarthy

Apocalyptica CD music
$13.65 From classical cover band devoted exclusively to performing Metallica's symphony-friendly epics to all purpose string ensemble interpreters of other heavy metal bands' music for the cello, to composers of original material fit to mingle with even more metallic translations, Finland's Apocalyptica had come a long way in the span of their first three albums. And, naturally, there were bound to be further innovations lined up for the band's fourth opus, Reflections, which arrived in 2003 bearing not a single heavy metal cover, and introducing several unexpected innovations into Apocalyptica's m.o., to boot. Chief among these was the addition of a drummer behind the group (recently paired down from quartet to trio), and since Apocalyptica's virtuosos would hardly stand for anything short of brilliance for such an assignment, that percussionist wound up being none other than Slayer legend Dave Lombardo, on whose Grip Inc. albums, group leader Eicca Toppinen had conveniently performed as well. One of those rare rock drummers whose sound and style is instantly recognizable, Lombardo was more than up to the task, providing the necessary flailing-limbs thrust behind dramatically driving originals like "Prologue (Apprehension)," "Somewhere Around Nothing," and "Resurrection" (which sounds like it should have originated as a metal song, but didn't). Apocalyptica also does without him on several compositions, of course, but they keep the experimentation coming by adding a pianist for the exquisite ballad "Far Away," discreet synth effects for the multi-faceted "Cohkka," full-on drum machines for "Heat," and a Spanish horn section for "Toreador II" -- Ole! And for those fans who simply want to hear them shred, there's plenty of that throughout this set, with the suitably named "Pandemonium" offering an especially blinding display. All in all, Apocalyptica's first foray into all-original material is nothing short of triumphant, and an eye opener for rock music fans who simply cam

Apocalyptica songs
$10.69 In addition to laying claim to being (most likely) the world's only heavy metal band composed entirely of cellists, Apocalyptica are also compulsively listenable. | | Jason Becker Raspberry Jams CD (1999)
Apocalyptica album
$13.85 There are few stories in rock music as tragic as that of Jason Becker. Just as six-string stardom was handed to him on a silver platter -- by landing a gig with David Lee Roth and appearing on the A Little Ain't Enough album -- Becker was stricken with A.L.S. (better known as Lou Gehrig's Disease), which by the mid-'90s had completely robbed him of his ability to play a musical instrument. Still, sporadic releases were issued, such as the odds and ends collection, Raspberry Jams, in 1999. Comprised solely of previously unreleased demos, you instantly detect Becker's impressive six-string ability (in a late-'80s and early-'90s sorta way), as evidenced by such selections as "Becker-Ola," "If You Shoot...Shoot -- Don't Talk," and a sweet and serene collaboration with Marty Friedman (Becker's former bandmate in Cacophony), "Black Stallion Jam." Fans of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani-esque guitar heroics will certainly appreciate Raspberry Jams. ~ Greg Prato

| | Deep Purple Come Taste The Band CD (1975) (Import) England; United Kingdom
Apocalyptica music CDs
$7.59 This 1975 release from U.K. rock legends Deep Purple featues vocalist David Coverdale (Whitesnake).
When Ritchie Blackmore departed Deep Purple in the mid-'70s and formed Rainbow (which featured Ronnie James Dio), his replacement was Tommy Bolin. To be sure, Blackmore was a darn tough act to follow, but Bolin proved himself to be a fine guitarist in his own right on Come Taste the Band, his first album with Deep Purple. But unfortunately, Bolin didn't have exceptional material to work with -- decent and likable, but hardly exceptional. While sweaty yet melodic cuts like "Dealer," "Lady Luck," and "You Keep on Moving" are far from bad, nothing here is in a class with "Smoke on the Water" or "Highway Star." Deep Purple's more hardcore devotees will want this album, though it's far from the best representation of their ...

| | Black Sabbath Paranoid CD (1971) (Import) United Kingdom
Apocalyptica CD music
$11.99 PARANOID proved to be Black Sabbath's most focused, consistent, and successful record. Leaving behind the amorphous, extended jams of their debut for focused songs and a more structured sound, Black Sabbath virtually wrote the book on heavy metal with the ominous, unforgettable riffs, thunderous rhythms, and dark themes on this release. There are some up-tempo rockers, the famous title track for one, but for the most part PARANOID oozes along like a bad dream, as on the slinky, creepy opener, "War Pigs," or the lumbering thud of "Iron Man" (which boasts one of the most indelible electric guitar riffs in rock history).
Digitally remastered 1996 reissue on Castle of the metalmonster's second album. Originally released in 1970, themulti-platinum reached #12 in the U.S., largely in part tothe hits 'War Pigs', 'Iron Man' and the title smash. Takenfrom the original master tapes, this edition also containsfaithfully restored artwork. Eight tracks total.
The album's title is apt: PARANOID is filled with an edgy aggression and lyrics about war, insanity, death, and destruction. Ozzy Osbourne's flat, affectless voice merges perfectly with Tony Iommi's fuzzed-out, sledgehammer power chords and the bruising bass and drum lines to create an intense, freaky, horror-show universe. There are elements of blues-rock and psychedelia (the floating "Planet Caravan," in ...
