This two-fer CD combines the James Gang's 1972 albums Straight Shooter and Passin' Thru. Originally these LP's were released separately on MCA and had been out of print until being reissued in 2005 on Beat Goes On. Neither album can be recommended to anyone but the most ardent fan, as both sessions pale in comparison to the Joe Walsh years. The most interesting track is "Madness," which finds the band sounding very much like vintage Grand Funk Railroad. Unfortunately, the abysmal "Hairy Hypochondriac," is a definite low point in the James Gang's history. ~ Al Campbell

First things first; Michael Bolton has long since rid himself of that ridiculous semi-mullet that detractors were so fond of mocking. Visuals aside, his sound has similarly gotten an update on ONLY A WOMAN LIKE YOU. The opening track "Dance With Me" is a propulsive, lusty Latin-pop number a la Ricky Martin. If that's not enough of a curve ball for those who think they know everything about Michael Bolton, try the semi-hip-hop rhythm loops underlying "Slowly" on for size. That's not to say that those enamored of the "vintage" Bolton sound should fear finding themselves totally at sea; the balance of the album is filled with slow-burning, melodic power ballads co-written by Bolton with the likes of Desmond Child and Richard Marx. It's just that there's a touch of progress to be found on A WOMAN LIKE YOU, and nobody can fault Bolton for that.
