Letta Mbulu Sings/Free Soul album
$7.19 This 1998 CD reissues keyboardist Patrice Rushen's first two recordings as a leader except for one selection ("Puttered Bopcorn") from the first date that was left out due to lack of space. Twenty at the time of the earlier set, Rushen showed a great deal of potential for the future, potential that (at least in the jazz world) was unfortunately never realized. Rushen is heard on the Prelusion album heading a septet that includes tenor-saxophonist Joe Henderson (the most memorable soloist), trumpeter Oscar Brashear, trombonist George Bohanon and Hadley Caliman on reeds; the music is essentially advanced hard bop with touches of fusion. The later date has a similar group (without Henderson) and with guest spots for flutist Hubert Laws and guitarist Lee Ritenour. The R&B-ish vocal by Josie James ...
| | Heart Of The Congos CD (1977)
Letta Mbulu Sings/Free Soul CD music
$9.29 The original version of HEART OF THE CONGOS is available on VP (1287).
HEART OF THE CONGOS is a landmark reggae album whose initial obscurity was due to a dispute between producer Lee Perry and his label, Island Records. Perry's idea to create a roots vocal album took shape when Cedric Myton and Roy Johnson auditioned at his Black Ark Studio. The resulting album had Myton ...

| | Silver Apples/Contact CD (1968)
Letta Mbulu Sings/Free Soul songs
$12.05 Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios, North Hollywood, California).
When the Silver Apples were formed in the mid-60's, Simeon Coxe and Danny Taylor had no way of knowing that they were forging the prototype of experimental electronic music. Connecting over a dozen oscillators, Coxe created a homemade synthesizer which produced a world of futuristic bleeps, sweeps, distortions, and repetitious basslines. With the addition of Taylor's drums, they sounded like The Velvet Underground fronted by Nikola Tesla. In 1968 they released their eponymous album. Where their sound wasn't met simply with perplexity, it was met with perplexity and success--the single, "Oscillations," even cracked Philadelphia's top ten.
The success of SILVER ...
| | Trinity Shanty Town Determination: 1976-1978 CD (2000)
Letta Mbulu Sings/Free Soul album
$14.49 Digitally remastered by Kevin Metcalf (2000, The Soundmasters, London, England.)
This is a reissue of an obscure classic from the late 1970s, an album made by the young reggae deejay Trinity under the aegis of the great roots singer and producer Yabby You (Vivian Jackson). Trinity was just 22 when he recorded this album, and at this point he owed a tremendous stylistic debt to Big Youth; still, his delivery is original enough and his lyrics clever enough that he sounds less like an imitator than a respectful disciple. Although by this time in his career Trinity had already begun anticipating the materialistic orientation of dancehall reggae (most notably with his huge hit "Three Piece Suit"), Shanty Town Determination consists entirely of "cultural" lyrics -- most of the songs are religious numbers like "Rasta Determination" and "Samson the Strongest Man," but there is also an herb anthem (the archetypal "Quarter Pound a Ishens") and some political material, all of it chanted over Yabby You's finest rhythms and dubbed ...
| | Jackie McLean Destination Out! CD (1963) Remastered
Letta Mbulu Sings/Free Soul CD music
$9.45 This is part of Blue Note's Limited Edition Connoisseur series.
As the title suggests, there is little about this disc that would constitute a safe approach to jazz. But then, alto man Jackie McLean never was one to take the easy path. The adventurousness of this set from 1963 hints of the changing scene at the time and McLean makes a bold statement ...
