Cologne
$14.65 Personnel: Marcin Wasilewski (piano); Marcin Wasilewski; Slawomir Kurkiewicz (double bass); Michal Miskiewicz (drums). Recording information: Rainbow Studio, Oslo, Norway (03/2004). Photographer: Andrzej Tyszko. Jazz fans the world over have become familiar with pianist Marcin Wasilewski, bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz, and drummer Michal Miskiewicz because they make up three quarters of the Tomasz Stanko Quartet. Working with Stanko live since 1993 when they were in their teens, they are now his studio band as well, and perform on his two recent, widely acclaimed ECM outings, The Soul of Things (2002) and Suspended Night (2004). This rhythm section is a prime reason for the success of those stellar recordings. Trio marks the debut of Wasilewski, Kurkiewicz, ...

"Wrong's What I Do Best," Jones sings in one song from Walls Can Fall, and listening to the album you almost believe he's telling the truth. Jones makes the same albums he's always made; two producers (this time Emory Gordy Jr.) since Billy Sherrill have failed to do more than decrease the number of novelty songs and tune up Jones' sound, which is still defined by low piano melodies and sawing fiddle. Jones continues to play off his legend: Songs like "I Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair," "Drive Me to Drink," and a cover of Merle Haggard's "The Bottle Let Me Down" sound scarier because of George's past. The thing is, wrong isn't what Jones does best. What Jones does best is consequences, ...
| | Carlo Actis Dato Tomorrow Night Gig CD (2002)
Cologne
$14.39 TAO is an acronym formed from the band member's names: Tachibana/Actis Dato/Ohta. TAO: Keisuke Ohta (vocals, violin); Carlo Actis Dato (saxophone); Yasuhiko Tachibana (bass). Includes liner notes by Paul De Barros. This is a rather strange release, one that could prompt a few jazz critics to threaten to put Carlo Actis Dato in the same category as Eugene Chadbourne. Strike one: Sound quality on Tomorrow Night Gig is somehow hollow, subpar with other Leo releases. Strike two: At times this trio feels like it values kidding around over musicianship. Ideas are thrown in and out vigorously and don't always make sense. If these elements sound negative, on the other hand the album salvages what surely was an exciting evening, completely over the top, including an enthusiastic hooting audience. The Italian saxophonist is joined by Japanese bassist Yasuhiko Tachibana and violinist Keisuke Ohta. The latter ...
