A jealous ranch hand stirs up trouble when his ex-lover, the boss' amoral wife, makes unwanted advances to the new foreman. Glenn Ford, Ernest Borgnine, and Rod Steiger star. Jubal Troop (Glenn Ford) is an honest, well-intentioned cowhand who has come into town looking for work. When he is injured in a riding accident, rancher Shep Horgan (Ernest Borgnine) offers him a job tending horses, but before long trouble is brewing and Morgan's coquettish wife, Mae (Valerie French) falls for Jubal. The dubious cowhand Pinky (Rod Steiger) won't stand for Jubal stealing Mae's attention away from him. He slyly convinces Shep that the well-behaved Jubal is sleeping with Mae and sends the whole Horgan ranch into an uproar.
In spite of its heavy storyline, JUBAL is actually quite a funny film. The pairing of Glenn and Borgnine makes for several amusing scenes. The plot gradually morphs from psychodrama to black comedy to comedy (similar to films like THE SWIMMER and WILD THINGS) evoking mirth and laughter, fear and loathing. Director Delmer Daves welds all of the unsuspecting chaos together, making JUBAL a non-traditional but very memorable Western. Jubal Reviews: "[F]ord's grandest ranch-based Shakespearean soap opera."

$12.85 Based on the journals of Brother Gaspar de Carvajal, AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD is director Werner Herzog's hallucinatory tale of Spanish colonialists searching for El Dorado, the legendary city of gold, in 16th-century Peru. When the travellers reach an impasse, a scouting party is assembled to search for any traces of the mythical empire. As they attempt to forge their way through the dense jungle, more and more of the party falls ill while their ruthless leader, Don Lope de Aguirre (Klaus Kinski), grows increasingly insane.
Widely considered to be Herzog's finest film, AGUIRRE, which shares much in common with Francis Ford Coppola's APOCALYPSE NOW, highlights the director's visionary approach to filmmaking. Like Coppola's film, accounts of AGUIRRE's shooting are laced with legendary incidents, such as the time Herzog reportedly held a gun to Kinski's head to get him to finish a scene. Whatever transpired between Herzog and Kinski, it made for astonishing cinema, as evidenced by the actor's haunting performance and ...

$9.69 A classic noirish mystery with a consummate ensemble of actors. Dana Andrews adroitly plays the detective who delves into the murder of the stunningly beautiful Laura, with whom it seems everyone, including the detective himself, is in love. But Webb steals the show as the titular ingenue's creepily elegant social mentor, Waldo Lydecker. Based on the novel by Vera Caspary. Academy Award Nominations: 4, including Best Director. Academy Awards: Best (Black-and-White) Cinematography.

$10.49 Edward Dmytryk directed this literate Western, a remake of THE HOUSE OF STRANGERS, which is itself loosely based on Shakespeare's KING LEAR. Tyrannical cattle baron Matt Devereaux (Spencer Tracy) has raised his older sons harshly, leaving them neglected and bitter, particularly Ben (Richard Widmark). Matt's youngest son, Joe (Robert Wagner), however, receives the most attention from Matt's wife, a Comanche indian (Katy Jurado). Joe remains loyal, even taking the rap when the old man gets hauled up on charges of launching a raid on a nearby copper mine. After spending three years in jail, Joe comes home to find his dad dead from a stroke, his mother back with her tribe, and his brothers running the ranch into the ground. Joe, understandably shocked and enraged, then plots his revenge.
The film features a solid script by Richard Murphy and strong supporting performances by Hugh O'Brien, Eduard Franz, Earl Holliman and E.G. Marshall. It's interesting to see Spencer Tracy in such an unsympathetic light as the patriarch; his scenes with Jurado comprise some of ...
