This previously unissued set by the great bebop saxophonist Sonny Stitt does not contain any real surprises. Stitt, who at the time was using a Varitone octave device on his horns (it is fortunately barely noticeable here), performs with his regular band of the period, a trio with organist Don Patterson and drummer Billy James (who unaccountably is listed on the CD as "Billy Pierce"). With the exception of the medium-tempo blues "Shake Your Head," Stitt has recorded all of these standards numerous times elsewhere. Although his playing on both alto and tenor is quite professional and reasonably creative within the boundaries of his boppish music, Stitt sometimes sounds as if he is just going through the motions. The generic liner notes and LP-length playing time are also slight minuses to this swinging but predictable release. ~ Scott Yanow
Sonny Stitt was well-known for the ability to play saxophone fast, with authority over the most difficult of chord progressions. Sonny recorded his first session as leader in 1946 for Savoy with Kenny Dorham, Bud Powell and Kenny Clarke. In 1950, he made

It's Magic album
$9.89 Warming Up! collects two trio albums recorded by pianist Billy Taylor in 1960-1961, the first under the same title, the second Interlude. On the first 12 pieces he's joined by bassist Henry Grimes and drummer Ray Mosca, on the later 11, Doug Watkins takes Grimes' place. The similar setup and personnel mean that both albums flow together as a piece, though each carries a separate mood owing to the albums' different conceptions. Warming ...
| | Richard "Groove" Holmes On Basie's Bandstand CD (2003)
It's Magic CD music
$12.35 Some wags might claim there's already enough organ-based '60s soul-jazz in the Prestige catalog without throwing a previously unreleased album of the stuff on the bonfire. And your first inclination might be to dismiss this trio date, on which Richard "Groove" Holmes is joined by guitarist Gene Edwards and drummer George Randall, as more of the same old. However, though it does boast much of the expected characteristics of the Prestige sound, this live material, recorded at Count Basie's Lounge in Harlem on April 22, 1966, is above average and worth hearing. The sound quality's very good and fresh, but more importantly, the stripped-down trio arrangements boil the soul-jazz genre down to its most powerful essence. Most soul-jazz acts felt obligated to break up their up-tempo numbers with sleepy renditions of standards, but everything selected for release here's mid-tempo or faster, which, frankly, ...

| | Booker Ervin Tex Book Tenor CD (2005)
It's Magic songs
$10.25 Tex Book Tenor was recorded in 1968 as a follow-up to Booker Ervin's debut date for Blue Note, The In Between, which was released in January of the same year. (Ervin had made two records for Pacific Jazz, which is now owned, like Blue Note, by EMI.) The album remained unreleased until 1976, when it was issued with an also unreleased Horace Parlan date on a double LP called Back from the Gig. This is its first appearance on CD. The lineup is stellar and includes Billy Higgins, Woody Shaw, Kenny Barron, and bassist Jan Arnet from Czechoslovakia. Barron and Ervin had worked together before, and Arnet had worked with Ervin three years earlier as a touring partner in Germany. The music here includes three Ervin originals, Barron's wonderful "Gichi," and Shaw's "In a Capricornian Way." The Afro-Latin-influenced grooves of "Gichi" display Ervin playing his solo in prime snake-charmer ...

| | Maynard Ferguson On A High Note: Best Of The Concord Jazz Recordings CD (2007)
It's Magic album
$9.65 Trumpeter Maynard Ferguson's move to Concord Records in the mid-'90s was a return to form for the iconic high-note jazz musician. Having scored his biggest success in the '70s with the jazz-funk of "The Theme from 'Rocky'," Ferguson had achieved a level of fame, money and legend few of his contemporaries would match. However, by the '80s the public's changing taste in music and even Ferguson's own glitzy, over-the-top aesthetic led to a bit of a backlash against him. Often labeled a pop sell-out, Ferguson had become a victim of his own success. It didn't help either that he chose to tour incessantly, anywhere and everywhere he could, more often than not appearing at local high school auditoriums. This business model, while endearing him to countless adolescent marching and concert bandmembers, ...
