Drummer Babatunde Lea, whose previous recordings on Motema Music have met with universal critical acclaim, reaches a new creative plateau with this new release. A veteran of musical associations with some of the most important and influential performers
Personnel: Babatunde Lea (vocals, balafon, drums, congas, percussion); Babatunde Lea; Richard Howell (vocals, saxophone, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, kalimba, percussion); Geoff Brennan (acoustic bass, double bass); Ron Belcher (double bass); Bujo Kevin Jones (percussion); Steve Turre (conch shell, trombone); Glen Pearson (piano). Audio Mixers: Babatunde Lea; John Greenham. Liner Note Authors: Babatunde Lea; Willard Jenkins. Recording information: Coast STudios, San Francisco, CA (2004). Photographer: Jean-Marc Lubrano. Drummer/percussionist Babatunde Lea's Suite Unseen CD has plenty of variety and is wide-ranging. There are hard bop features for trombonist Steve Turre and tenor saxophonist Richard Howell (with the front line sometimes recalling the Jazz Crusaders of the 1960s), a display for Turre's conch shells on another selection, some chanting, brief percussion interludes, and a five-part suite by Lea that is spread throughout this disc rather than occurring in consecutive tracks. "Suite Unseen" would have been more effective if its movements had been placed together, but one can adjust the CD player to achieve that. The other nine numbers all fit in well and, with Glen Pearson contributing some McCoy Tyner-inspired piano and steady work from bassist Geoff Brennan (Ron Belcher takes his place on one number) and percussionist Bujo Jones, this is a spirited and very musical outing. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Dave Holland Overtime CD (2005)
Suite Unseen: Summoner Of The Ghost
$13.89 Personnel: Antonio Hart (flute, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone); Mark Gross (alto saxophone); Chris Potter (tenor saxophone); Gary Smulyan (baritone saxophone); Duane Eubanks, Alex Sipiagin, Taylor Haskins (trumpet, flugelhorn); Josh Roseman, Robin Eubanks, Jonathan Arons (trombone); Steve Nelson (vibraphone, marimba); Dave Holland (double bass); Billy Kilson (drums). This exceptional date by Dave Holland Big Band was recorded in 2002 in New York, yet remained unreleased until 2005. As is to be expected, Holland assembled a fine cast of seasoned and young players, some of whom are veterans of Holland's quintets and quartets. These are four saxophones -- two alto, tenor and baritone -- three trumpets and trombones, and vibes as well as bass and drums. They include Chris ...

Suite Unseen: Summoner Of The Ghost
$13.59 Dave Holland (1~Bass): Dave Holland (double bass); Chris Potter (saxophone); Steve Nelson (vibraphone); Nate Smith (drums); Robin Eubanks. Personnel: Robin Eubanks (trombone); Steve Nelson Quartet (vibraphone, marimba, tambourine); Nate Smith (drums). Recording information: Avatar Studios, New York, NY (12/2005). Photographer: Ulli Gruber. One word that comes to mind when listening to Critical Mass is generosity. Double-bassist Dave Holland, four decades into his career, could certainly be forgiven for taking the word "leader" at its literal meaning, calling all the shots and keeping his musicians at bay. But that's not what he's about, and at any given time Critical Mass could just as easily have been credited to saxist Chris Potter, trombonist Robin Eubanks, vibist/marimbaist Steve Nelson, or drummer Nate Smith. Each player is provided with ample moments in which to take charge, and not fleeting, gratuitous moments but rather significant chunks of solo/lead space. ...
