"Don't Wanna Try," a single that wound up cracking the Top 20 in 2003, is probably responsible for allowing Frankie J to bring in the likes of songwriters/producers Bryan-Michael Cox and Mario Winans, along with features from Baby Bash and Swisha House heavyweight Paul Wall, for follow-up The One. The singer continues to work closely with Happy Perez, but Cox's presence on not one but three tracks -- including "How to Deal," a clone of Usher's Cox-penned "Burn" in both sound and sentiment -- adds significant heft to his catalog. What's a Man to Do? tended to falter whenever J broke from his sweet, yearning (not whining) manner to adopt a tougher tone, but he smartly leaves that for Bash's and Wall's guest spots here. The One is a step forward in every aspect. Lead single "Obsession (No Es Amor)" shot up to the Top Ten upon release, only solidifying J's mainstream presence. ~ Andy Kellman For Frankie J's 2005 album, THE ONE, the Mexican-born crooner offers up an impressive collection of songs helmed by a noteworthy array of producers, including Mario Winans and Irv Gotti. And while these established music-makers could have turned out an Usher clone, the man born Francisco Javier Bautista maintained enough creative control to craft more of a sensitive, balladeer persona for himself. The singer's style is exemplified by the lush "Story of My Life," with acoustic-guitar accompaniment and a pleading tone that's more yearning than desperate. Throughout THE ONE, however, J's Latin roots are never far away, as he croons Spanish couplets amid the snappy beats of the R&B-flavored remake of Aventura's bachata hit "Obsession (No Es Amor)," which features rapper Baby Bash. J's falsetto rings convincingly on the Winans-produced Jodeci-like jam "Can't Say It's Love" and the title track, with its perfect blend of clavinet, strings, and backing vocals. Even when the vibe gets a bit rougher, as with "On the Floor," Frankie J holds his own. As a bonus, THE ONE tacks on extra cuts, including an all-Spanish reading of "Obsession (No Es Amor)." One
$6.39 The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion). Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002. You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration. Playing it would have been achievement enough, but their status as a happening thing was cemented at the end of the ceremony, during the encores, when everybody was taking their final bows. Bill moseyed up over to Andrea, put his arm around her, and when she was looking away, sized her up -- at precisely the same moment Chuck Berry was checking her out. If that doesn't mean that you've broken America, entering its pop culture, I don't know what does, expect for maybe a VH1-endorsed piece of product like Live in Dublin. Lo and behold, that's exactly what the Corrs received in the spring of 2002, a year and a half after "In Blue" and its accompanying single "Breathless" broke down the doors in America for the U.S. Only two songs on this set list are shared with In Blue, but that doesn't mean ...
| | Brian Mcknight Gemini CD (2005)
One
$10.65 Personnel: Brian McKnight (vocals, keyboards); Juvenile (rap vocals); Tyron Chase (guitar); Chris Loftin (bass guitar); Prescott Ellison (drums). How do you approach an album that's lush and elegant on one hand and lyrically nasty on the other? Bring your lover and your playful side because Gemini is an aptly named loose and free bedroom winner from Brian McKnight. The cool crooner has had little trouble going platinum in the past, but his albums have also been a bit too patchy, too concerned with being contemporary, and too clogged with guest stars to let McKnight's overabundance of talent really stretch its legs. Rappers Juvenile, Skip, and Akon liven up the slick and sneaky "Watcha Gonna Do?," while Talib Kweli's short appearance on "She" doesn't feel tacked on at all. That's where the concessions to music of the moment stop, and while they're not at all unnecessary, the album really succeeds when McKnight wears all his singer, composer, musician, and producer hats at once and brews up something between Prince's self-titled release and a Sweetback album. Sprinkle in some up to date innuendo and you've got a more ...
| | Baby Bash Super Saucy CD (2005)
One
$12.65 Personnel: Baby Bash (rap vocals); Doom, Princess, DJ I.C.E., Avant (vocals); E-40, Grimm, Akon, Lucky Luciano, Nate Dogg, Paul Wall , Angel Dust, Pitbull, Bosko (rap vocals); Natalie (background vocals). Audio Mixers: James Hoover; Brian Stanley . Recording information: Digital Services, Houston, TX; Grill Studios, Oakland, CA; Konvict Music Studios, Atlanta, GA; Larabee North, Los Angeles, CA; Muzik Factory, Las Vegas, NV; Sony Studios, New York, NY. Acknowledging crunk and guest spots more than last time out, Baby Bash offers a lighter follow-up to the excellent Tha Smokin' Nephew, one that's more fun but less filling. That's cool, because Super Saucy isn't so much a letdown as a party alternative to Nephew with the swaggering Bash sounding perfectly at home with this radio-friendlier material. Before he was basking in the Houston ghetto sun. Now he's basking in the fame and fortune Nephew brought, and you can't blame the guy for sounding "bubbalated." Slinging the slang is one of the things Bash does best on the album, along with adding some much needed freshness to the tired crooner/rapper combo, otherwise ...
| | Aventura God's Project CD (2005)
One
$13.85 Aventura: Anthony Santos (vocals); Max Santos (rap vocals, bass guitar); Lenny Santos, Henry Santos Jeter. Personnel: Henry Santos Jeter (vocals, background vocals); Judy Ann Santos (vocals); Eric "Bori" Rivera, Lenny Santos (guitar); Pedro Conga (congas). Additional personnel: Don Omar, Nina Sky, Antony Santos, Tego Calderón (vocals). Audio Mixers: Gerry Grimaud Jr.; Roger Pauletta. Recording information: Boondog Studio; Cutting Studios; Skylight Studios. Photographer: Christian Eckert Quartet. Despite the title, with 2005's God's Project, Aventura continues to define their own destiny. In fact, with their widespread popularity and the outpouring of groups who mimic their distinctly New York-influenced bachata, they may be helping to define the genre, as well. Under the clever guise of a boy band lurks some genuine musicianship, particularly evident in Lenny ...
| | Pretty Ricky Bluestars CD (2005)
One
$10.15 Personnel: Pretty Ricky; C Milli (vocals); Ludas Charles (guitar); Coop (keyboards); David Chiverton (drums); Blaque Soul Choir, M.H. Cooper, Troy Taylor (background vocals); Static Major (vocals, background vocals); Pleasure (keyboards, background vocals); Diamond, Slick , Spectacular. Audio Mixers: Kevin "KD" Davis; Ray Seay.com; Alvin Speights; Rich Keller. Recording information: Blue Star Studio, Miami, FL; Circle House Studios, Miami, FL; Platinum Studios, New York, NY. Photographer: Jonathan Mannion. Arrangers: Static Major; Diamond "Baby Blue" Smith; Damon Eden. Pretty Ricky, a quartet of related young men who could be filed under R&B or rap, fly so over the top that they can no longer see the top. They're the kind of guys your mother wouldn't think to warn you about. That's how outrageous they are, fitting somewhere between Usher and the Ying Yang Twins at their most lecherous, but they're not nearly as effective as either influence -- "Get a taste of the salami, knock ...

$15.89 Personnel: Frankie J (vocals); Krayzie Bone, Layzie Bone, Mannie Fresh, Slim, Chamillionaire (rap vocals); Chris Pettaway, Charles Pettaway (guitar); Dennis D-Moe Moorehead (keyboards). Audio Mixers: Manny Marroquin; Duro; James Hoover; Phil Tan; Sam Thomas ; Leslie Brathwaite. Photographer: Ronald Cadiz. On PRICELESS, Frankie J's follow-up to his 2005 breakthrough album, THE ONE, the Latino vocalist presents another potent set of hip-hop-laden R&B. With his smooth voice and immediately catchy tunes, the singer (aka Francisco Javier Bautista) confidently mines the same pop-tinged stutter-funk terrain as Justin Timberlake and Usher, ...
| | Jay-Z Blueprint CD (2001) Edited
One
$10.39 Personnel includes: Jay-Z, Eminem, Q-Tip, Slick Rick, Biz Markie (rap vocals); Josey Scott (vocals); Victor Flowers (organ); Bink (programming). Producers include: Kayne West, Just Blaze, Trackmaster, Timbaland, Bink. THE BLUEPRINT was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. "Song Cry" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Male Rap Solo Performance. Personnel: Michele Mills, Josey Scott, Slick Rick, Biz Markie (vocals); Victor Flowers (organ). Audio Mixers: Jason Goldstein; Doug Wilson; Jimmy Douglas; Richard Huredia. Recording information: Baseline Studios, NY; Manhattan Center, NY. Photographer: Jonathan Mannion. When Jay-Z dropped "The City Is Mine" in 1997 and claimed New York's hip-hop throne upon the Notorious B.I.G.'s demise, many smirked and some even snickered. Four years later in 2001, when he released The Blueprint, no one was smirking and no one dared snicker. At this point in time, nobody in New York could match Jay-Z rhyme for rhyme and nobody in New York had fresher beats -- and many would argue that Jigga's reign was not just confined to New York but was, in fact, national. Yes, Jay-Z had risen to the top of the rap game in the late '90s and solidified his position with gigantic hits like "Big Pimpin" and "I Just Wanna Love You (Give It 2 Me)." Furthermore, The Blueprint's leadoff single, "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)," dominated urban radio numerous weeks before the album hit the streets, generating so much demand that Def Jam had to push up the album's street date because it was being so heavily bootlegged. So when Jay-Z opens The Blueprint dropping rhymes about "runnin' this rap sh*t," it's not so much arrogance as it is a matter of fact. And by the time he brutally dismisses two of his most formidable opponents, Mobb Deep and Nas, less than ten minutes into the album, there's little doubt that Jay-Z's status as the top MC in the game is justified. But that's just one song. There are 12 other songs on The Blueprint -- and they're all stunning, to the point where the album seems almost flawless. Besides rhymes that challenge those on Reasonable Doubt as the most crafted of Jay-Z's career to date in terms of not only lyrics but also flow and delivery, The Blueprint also boasts some of his most extravagant beats, courtesy of impressive newcomers Kayne West and Just Blaze. Moreover, if the rhymes and beats alone don't make The Blueprint a career highlight for Jay-Z, the minimal guest appearances surely do. For once, listeners get exactly what they want: Jay-Z and nothing but Jay-Z, over beats so loaded with marvelously flipped samples the songs don't even need big vocal hooks. Besides, when you're already the top MC in the game, there's no need for crossover attempts. Uneven albums like Hard Knock Life were the crossover attempts, and now that Jay-Z is "runnin' this rap sh*t," a fully realized masterpiece like The Blueprint is the glorious result. ~ Jason Birchmeier It's official. With his fifth album, aptly titled THE BLUEPRINT, Jay-Z has crowned himself the king of rap music. Laying a foundation for other MC's to follow, Jay Hova presents a lyrical masterpiece. And to ...
| | Four Freshmen More 4 Freshmen & 5 Trombones/In Person Vol. 2 CD (2002)
One
$13.59 Into the '60s we go with the Four Freshmen! In Person Vol. 2 and More 4 Freshmen and 5 Trombones are the only two Capitol albums by the group yet to be reissued on CD. Featuring the 34 best tracks from their half-dozen releases or so on the Liberty label. Collector's Choice Music. 2002.
2 LPs on 1 CD: MORE 4 FRESHMEN & 5 TROMBONES (1964)/IN PERSON VOL. 2. In 1996, Collectors' Choice Music licensed from Capitol Records and released a two-fer CD combining the Four Freshman's albums Four Freshmen and 5 Trombones and The Four Freshmen in Person, so combining the respective follow-ups to those LPs, More 4 Freshmen and 5 Trombones and The Four Freshmen in Person, Vol. 2, is a logical enough step. One might ask why the two trombone albums and the two live albums were not combined, but in fact the pairings make more sense the way they are. The first two albums were released in 1956 and 1958, a period when the Four Freshmen were major album sellers; the first trombone album reached the Top Ten and the first live album the Top 20. The second live album was released in 1963, the second trombone album in 1964. This was a very different time in the group's career; they were long off the charts ...
| | Mogwai Happy Music For Happy People CD (2003) (Import) Bonus Track; Japan
One
$38.09 Full title - Happy Music For Happy People. Japanese edition of the Scottish indie act's 2003 and fourth album, includes the bonus track 'Sad DC'. Rock Action/Toy's Factory.
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Additional personnel: Luke Sutherland (guitar, violin); Greg Lawson, (violin); Scott Dickinson (viola); David Gillian, Caroine Barber (cello). Recorded at Cava Studios, Glasgow, Scotland. This 2003 release from Scottish post-rock band Mogwai includes the usual collection of hip, experimental beats and loops hailed by critics around the globe. Japanese version includes a bonus track. Personnel: Luke Sutherland (guitar, violin); Greg Lawson (violin); Scott Dickinson (viola); Donald Gillian, Caroline Barber (cello). Audio Mixer: Tony Doogan . Recording information: CaVa Studios, Glasgow, Scotland. At first glance, the album title Happy Songs for Happy People seems almost as ironic as the name of their previous album, Rock Action. After listening to the album, however, it's apparent that its title isn't just meant as a joke. Though "happy" isn't necessarily the first word that springs to mind when describing the band's intricate, brooding style, it is a word and emotion that is both simple and profound, much like the direction Mogwai's music takes here. Happy Songs for Happy People takes the focus and restraint of Rock Action to greater lengths, but it never feels like a rehash of their previous work. The palette of sounds the band uses -- which includes rolling guitars and pianos, swelling strings, persuasive but un-showy drumming, and occasional forays into distortion and electronics -- is a relatively small one, but the band uses it wisely on tracks as diverse as the lovely, understated "Kids Will Be Skeletons" (arguably the "happiest" song on the album) and the gloriously dense finale, "Stop Coming to My House," which piles layers and layers of distorted drums, guitars, and synths atop each other. Mogwai also employs its usual quietly beautiful/explosively noisy dynamic formula expertly, particularly on the gorgeous "Killing All the Flies," which feels much longer (in a good way) than four and a half minutes. Old-school Mogwai fans disappointed by the ...
