Eliel's EL QUE HABLA mix brings together some of the artists important to the scene in the 2000s. Don Omar, for example, weighs in with multiple tracks (such as the bouncy, robotic "De Nina a Mujer," his duet with Hector "El Bambino"). Baby Ranks's "Hoy Nena Quiero" has a familiar dancehall structure, while Glory's "La Popola" provides one of the collection's few Latin pop-derived moments (as well as one of its only female performers). Rapid-fire Spanish rhymes, bass-heavy mixes, and stuttering ragamuffin rhythms create a musical melange that will sound equally appropriate surging from high-end sound systems in contemporary reggae and Latin clubs alike.

Latin pop boy band Aventura has achieved no small amount of success with their unique blend of traditional Dominican bachata and sleek, Top 40-oriented R&B. THE LAST, Aventura's fifth studio release, further explores the band's swoon-worthy style, and is one of their most accomplished and impressive efforts.
As usual, the quartet plays to their strengths, which include lilting tropical ballads, with the occasional foray into hip-hop-flavored slow jams, such as "Spanish Fly," featuring cameos from Ludacris and Wyclef Jean. Additional cameos from Akon, Wisin y Yandel, and jazz legend Arturo Sandoval heighten the star appeal of THE LAST, but it's Aventura's smooth, sultry bachata-pop that steals the show.

Although Frontier Index's press and promotion seem to play up the alt-country angle of their sound, the band's self-titled album is more country-influenced than it is country-rock. The record offers reasonably high-quality guitar rock, with songs emphasizing winsome vulnerability, though never in a sappy way. The vocals are well-suited to this kind of material, as they're youthfully engaging in a fashion that suggests they might have a hard time forcing themselves to be tough and nasty. Fortunately, they don't try their hands at the hard stuff, instead going for a generally more languorous roots rock feel. Comparisons to fellow Canadian Neil Young and Young-influenced artists are going to be inevitable on hearing "I Ain't Hurtin'," with its melancholy combination of harmonica with electric and acoustic guitars. Most of the time, however, Frontier Index don't sound especially like Young; if anyone, they sound rather like a 2005 alternative rock version of the late-'60s persona of one of Young's early bandmates, Richie Furay. The slow and fragile tunes, interestingly, are the ones that are most durable ("On and On" and "San Antone" being other standouts in that regard). The grinding hard rock of "If It Don't Work ...
