$14.30 Rush is no stranger to best-of compilation albums, they've released a slew of them. They are also no stranger to DVDs. To mark their 35th anniversary, they've released Working Men, which is both; it marks their first best-of live compilation exclusively from the DVD sets Rush in Rio (2003), R30 (2005), and Snakes & Arrows Live (2008). There is also an unreleased cut from R30 -- a killer version of One Little Victory. While fans may simply regard this as a record company cash grab, hardcore fans know how closely Rush monitors each release and controls all aspects of their career. On hearing these tracks without benefit of the visuals, it becomes lucidly clear that in ...

| | Marc Antoine Madrid CD (1998)
Live At Hotpoint CD music
$15.19 Anyone who appreciates the richness of Spanish music (be it traditional flamenco or the popular "flamenco rock" of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s) can't help but take notice when an album is titled Madrid. However, this weak effort by guitarist Marc Antoine lacks the soulfulness of Spanish music, and was recorded with the so-called "smooth jazz" market in mind. Imagine the most insipid recordings of Earl Klugh, Lee Ritenour or Grant Geissman having Spanish overtones, and you can get an idea what Antoine sounds like on such lightweight, saccharine tunes as "Jazzenco," "Plaza Mayor," and "Sunland." Antoine's albums may have wound up in the jazz bins, but this dull and homogenized CD is nothing more than new age with a beat. Whether you're into Spanish music, pop or jazz (or all of the above), Madrid is an album to keep away from. ~ Alex ...
| | Frank Zappa Apostrophe' CD (1974) Remastered
Live At Hotpoint music CDs
$9.58 One of Frank Zappa's most commercially successful albums, APOSTROPHE is also among his goofiest. The album found its way to the semi-mainstream chiefly on the strength of "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow." As the title of that single indicates, the scatological humor and cheap jokes that are part of Zappa's stock in trade abound here (see also the self-explanatory "Stink-Foot"). Part of Zappa's genius, though, much like that of Gong's Daevid Allen, was to deflate his sophisticated instrumental excursions and conceptual work with lowbrow humor and downright silliness. Nowhere is that process more apparent than on APOSTROPHE.
The typically large band (including violin and horns) that accompanies Zappa here follows him through daunting twists and turns as tempos get turned around and counterpoint riffs bounce off each other at breakneck speed. In the midst of all this instrumental facility, Zappa's satirical side blazes forth, as on "Uncle Remus," which addresses ...

Live At Hotpoint music CDs
$19.69 Coming in between 1968's WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS LOVE and 1969's PUT A LITTLE LOVE IN YOUR HEART, 1968's LAUREL CANYON did not contain any hits on the order of those albums' title tracks. However, many fans now consider this country-rock-influenced set one of DeShannon's best. Highlights include the wistful title track, "She's My Best Friend," and a playful DUSTY IN MEMPHIS-style take on the Band's "The Weight." The 2005 reissue on RPM Records doubles the album's length with rarities and previously unreleased bonus tracks.
Laurel Canyon wonderfully captures the natural, idyllic vibe of its titular setting, the creative nexus of the late-'60s Los Angeles music scene. Swapping the polished pop approach of Jackie DeShannon's past hits for an appealingly rough-edged country-soul sensibility, the record celebrates a place and time that transcended the physical world to signify a virtual Garden of Eden for the flower-power generation. Featuring extensive contributions from pianist Mac "Dr. John" Rebennack and guitarist Russ Titleman, Laurel Canyon boasts a swampy, lived-in charm that perfectly complements DeShannon's sexily gritty vocals. Her soulful reading of the Band's "The Weight" anticipates Aretha Franklin's like-minded cover, ...
