| | Low Frequency In Stereo Travelling Ants Who Got Eaten CD Low Frequency In Stereo Discography of CDs
Instrumental rock has come in a variety of forms over the years, ranging from '60s surf groups like the Ventures to the folk-rock fingerpickers (acoustic guitarist John Fahey and his numerous disciples) to the Steve Vai/Joe Satriani/Randy Coven school of hard rock shredders. But Low Frequency in Stereo is an instrumental group that doesn't fall into any of those categories -- well, at least they are instrumentalists most of the time. Recorded in 2003 and released in 2005, Travelling Ants Who Got Eaten by Moskus finds the Norwegian band using vocalists on a few of the selections (including "Man Don't Walk" and "Slow Train Coming," both of which feature female singer Jomi Massage). Some hardcore fans might question that move, asking, "If jazz can be dominated by instrumentalists, why can't alternative rock have the occasional instrumental group? Is it really necessary for Low Frequency to add vocals?" But truth be told, the Norwegians are still instrumentalists at heart -- instrumentals dominate this alt-rock/lo-fi outing, and this release isn't following the example of the Bar-Kays (a great soul/funk outfit that started out as an instrumental group à la Booker T. & the MG's but became totally vocal-oriented in the '70s). Even on the vocal offerings, this album always sounds like a Low Frequency in Stereo project; vocals or not (usually not), the Norwegians maintain a recognizable, appealing sound that is as spacy and quirky as it is infectious. That infectiousness prevails whether they are incorporating jazz on "Hazelwood" and "Element," garage rock on "Limousine," or surf rock on "The Sun and the Moon and the Stars in the Sky." When bebop alto saxophonist Frank Morgan featured Abbey Lincoln on one of his albums, it didn't make him any less of an instrumentalist -- and similarly, the occasional use of vocalists doesn't compromise Low Frequency's identity one iota on this risk-taking CD. ~ Alex Henderson Travelling Ants Who Got Eaten Music Low Frequency In Stereo Travelling Ants Who Got Eaten Songs | 1. | Man Don'T Walk |

Travelling Ants Who Got Eaten
$14.49 The Organ's 2002 debut EP Sinking Hearts was more captivating than most of that year's full-length releases: over the course of just 15 minutes, the band crafted chiaroscuro meditations on falling in and out of love that were just as light and jangly as they were dark and brooding. The EP was a promising beginning, and Grab That Gun, the Organ's first album, builds on that promise by delivering more appealingly moody music instead of reinventing the band's sound. It's tempting, initially, to be slightly disappointed that the Organ didn't broaden its sonic territory. But, even though the music remains remarkably focused, Grab That Gun proves that the band has plenty of room for expression within its rather limited palette of droning organs, succinct drumming and sharp, upturned guitar lines that give new meaning to the term "hook." While this sound ...

| | Pillows Penalty Life CD (2003) Import
Travelling Ants Who Got Eaten
$37.25 Penalty Life starts with one of the best alt rock tracks there is -- a simple, clever number with the dynamic James Bond-themed rhythm section and deceptively effective college boy vocals. It's definitely justified to say that this song ("Dead Stock Paradise") sums up all the best there is about the Pillows (no capital in the official spelling) and their Pixies-inspired brand of rock that shows it's possible to stick firmly to the alternative side of music and still be fit for charts, radio, and movie credits. However, it's also a success that's too hard to replicate, at least along the course of one album, and so the expectations set by the first song will probably be brought down a bit by the end of Penalty Life. Which is a shame, really, as there are plenty of other strong tracks on the record -- "Freebee Honey," for one -- that show the Pillows' ability to pack huge amounts of energy and melody into three-minute chunks and deliver them without abusing the distortion pedal. The band has some garage rock vibe, but they sound upbeat, not reckless, and far too professional to really remind one ...
