Personnel: Kasper Villamue (piano); Jesper Bodilsen (bass instrument); Jeff "Tain" Watts (drums).
With so much focus on American jazz artists, the discovery of promising Europeans like pianist Kasper Villaume is a special treat. Joined by bassist Jesper Bodilsen and veteran drummer Jeff Tain Watts (a veteran of both Wynton and Branford Marsalis' rhythm sections, as well as being a bandleader himself), Villaume's second CD for Stunt opens with his superb post-bop vehicle "Please Enter-Tain." He teases his listeners with a disguised vamp to set up his romp through "Seven Steps to Heaven," showcasing Watts' formidable skills. His brisk setting of George Shearing's "Conception" alternates between bossa nova and bop. Villaume's introspective interpretation of Herbie Hancock's "Toys" is also memorable, while the trio's effective performance of a chestnut like "Caravan" also manages to find new territory to explore. Kasper Villaume is clearly deserving of wider international recognition. ~ Ken Dryden

Over the years, Hank Jones' work has been impressively consistent. The veteran pianist can, at times, be predictable and short on surprises, but rarely does one encounter a Jones album that is flat-out disappointing. Like other albums that Jones provided in the late '70s, The Trio doesn't take a lot of chances, but is solid and pleasing. Produced by Chiaroscuro president Hank O'Neal, this 1977 session finds Jones forming an acoustic piano trio with bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Bobby Rosengarden -- and not surprisingly, the three of them enjoy a consistently strong rapport on original material as well as familiar standards like "I'll Remember April," "Lullaby of the Leaves," and "S'Wonderful." Hinton and Rosengarden lay out on "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning," giving ...

Stan Getz Bossas & Ballads: The Lost Sessions CD  (2003)

CD $15.39  4.5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Live Recording Personnel: Stan Getz (tenor saxophone); Kenny Barron (piano); George Mraz (bass); Victor Lewis (drums).
Recorded at A&M Recording Studios, Hollywood, California in March 1989. Includes liner notes by David Ritz.
First off, these "Lost Sessions" were never actually lost. The music here was supposed to be released as the Stan Getz Quartet's first issue on A&M, and for the usual record company reasons, it was shelved instead. The tapes were in the vault and catalogs, so it's not like they were found in someone's closet. The bottom line is that Getz, already ill at this point, still had the goods. Produced by Herb Alpert (a genius in his own right even if his records don't always hold up), the bossas here are tough, innovative jazz tunes mainly written by Getz's pianist, Kenny Barron. Don't look for the gentle side of Getz that was so beautifully displayed on his early bossa records with Charlie ...

Recording information: Henson Recording Studios, Hollywood, CA (12/11/2004-12/14/2004).
Photographer: Nitin Vadukul.
On Terence Blanchard's FLOW, the hard-bop trumpeter steps outside his usual milieu to explore long-form composition. Divided into three sections entitled "Flow Part I," "Flow Part II, and "Flow Part III," this album focuses more on Blanchard's compositional skill than his improvisational prowess. This is not to say that FLOW is strict or rigid. Like the title implies, each track on ...

Bill Charlap, a versatile pianist based in swing who is also a longtime member of the Phil Woods Quintet, pays tribute to the great George Gershwin throughout this likable set. Although some of the ten Gershwin songs are slightly modernized, the music is very much in the tradition. There are up to four horns on some numbers, ...

Bela Fleck & The Flecktones: Bela Fleck (banjo); Howard Levy (harmonica); Victor Wooten (bass); Roy Wooten (percussion).
After disbanding New Grass Revival, Bela Fleck began re-creating the role of the banjo in the same way Charlie Parker redefined the role of the saxophone. But Fleck may be the least-innovative member of this quartet: Howard Levy gets chromatics from his blues harp, Victor Wooten picks banjo rolls on his bass, and Roy "Future Man" Wooten plays a Frankenstein-monster drum-machine/guitar synthesizer. For all the flash, there's little pretense; the group's astonishing musicianship keeps an "aw-shucks" accessibility that lets everybody follow the melody while they marvel. ~ Brian Mansfield
