Personnel: Katrine Madsen (vocals); Katrine Madsen; Hans Ulrik (flute, alto flute, harmonica, saxophone, tenor saxophone); Marten Lundgren, Marten Lundgren (trumpet); Jesper Bodilsen (bass instrument, double bass); Stefano Bollani (piano); Morten Lund (drums, percussion). Audio Mixer: Larry Nilsson. Recording information: 12/14/2003-04/??/2004. Photographer: Robin Skjoldborg. Arranger: Jesper Riis. Just reading the track list will likely make the more cynical jazz fan cringe and moan inwardly. Aside from a trio of originals, the set list of Close to You consists of overly familiar ballad standards ranging from Duke Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood" to the Beatles' "And I Love Her" and Burt Bacharach's legendarily sappy title track. Never fear, however: this is not an album of boring supper-club faux jazz. Fond though Katrine Madsen is of sentimental ballads like "The Very Thought of You," she's fearless about messing with the familiar and well-loved melodies: her rhythmically varied take on "The Look of Love" won't lead anyone to compare her to Patty Waters, but she'd likely get heckled by some drunk in the audience at the Cocoanut Grove, probably with that old standby "Hey, if you get near a tune, sing it!" Madsen's backing, a simple piano trio, stays unobtrusively in the background throughout, providing elegant but somewhat anonymous backing while leaving the focus entirely on her rich and appealing voice. ~ Stewart Mason Katrine Madsen Close To You Songs | 1. | Look of Love, The |

| | Jan Garbarek Dresden: In Concert CDs (2009)
Close To You
$23.29 Personnel: Jan Garbarek (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone). Audio Mixers: Jan Erik Kongshaug; Jan Garbarek; Manfred Eicher. It's hard to believe that after recording as a leader for 40 years, DRESDEN: IN CONCERT is Jan Garbarek's first-ever live album. For those who think that Garbarek abandoned jazz some time ago, this will be a shock. DRESDEN is an engaged, kinetic, double-disc, two-hour performance of his quartet playing in the modern jazz idiom and using all of its tenets--from complex harmonics and rhythmic invention to extended lyric improvisation--to create a tour de force that honors all the music he holds dear. Garbarek plays tenor, soprano, and selje flute here, and is accompanied by his regular group that includes drummer Manu Katche, pianist/keyboadist Rainer Brüninghaus, and electric bassist Yuri Daniel. There are 16 compositions that include tracks from previous albums -- some of them radically but exquisitely revamped for this quartet and performance. There are also tunes by his bandmates, and an extended, stellar reading of Milton Nascimento's gorgeous "Milagro Dos Piexes," that features some of the most inventive and dynamic dialogue between Garbarek and Brüninghaus on record. It's hard to believe that after recording as a leader for 40 years, Dresden: In Concert is Jan Garbarek's first-ever live album. He has recorded sparely in ...

| | Big Man, Big Guitar, Popa Chubby Live CD (2005)
Close To You
$14.29 Personnel: Popa Chubby (vocals, guitar); Popa Chubby; Galea (vocals, bass guitar); Nicholas D'Amato, Kris Jefferson (bass guitar); Vincent Duane, Vincent Daune (drums); Mike Lattrell (keyboards, background vocals); Steve Holley, Larry Crockett (drums). Audio Mixers: Popa Chubby; Pierre Brien. Recording information: Le Plan (06/22/2001-03/27/2004); Radio France Studios, Paris, France (06/22/2001-03/27/2004). It's not obvious from listening to it, but Popa Chubby's Big Man Big Guitar is a compilation of two live albums that were previously only available in Europe: Live at FIP and Wild. The CD is the sister title to a DVD, too, and while the release may show every sign of being a souvenir of the video, or a thrown-together hodgepodge, it isn't at all. Chubby's known for his blistering live sets, but this collection takes a risk by having a gradual dramatic arc, starting slowly with a slinky version of "Hey Joe" and working its way up to the frenzied "Keep on the Sunny Side" and "Time Is Killing Me" (consider the solo performance of "How'd a White Boy Get the Blues," a gutsy encore). What's fascinating for returning Chubby fans is that these shows come from 2001 and 2002, and the bitter political muse summoned for 2004's Peace, Love and Respect was not a major factor yet. You can hear the beginnings of it here on his moving and sincere post-9/11 song "Somebody Let the Devil Out," but the rest of the album is old-school Chubby, ambitious in a different direction and mad at the proverbial "man," not a particular (presidential) man. The slow-burn start is frustrating on first listen, but once you realize the much more exciting second half wouldn't have the punch it has without the buildup, you'll consider Big Man Big Guitar a well-built album instead of the usual contractual ...
| | Chuck Leavell Southscape CDs (2005) Digipak
Close To You
$12.59 As the keyboardist for the Rolling Stones, Chuck Leavell rock n rolls with the best of them. However, on his latest solo CD, he chooses to find a more jazzy and homey side to his playing. He has tapped two of his favorite saxophinists, Tim Ries who plays with Chuck in the Rolling Stones band, and one of Chuck’s former band mates, Randall Bramblett of Sea Level, to help him formulate an album of new southern anthems. Rounding out the band mates are Michael Rhodes on Bass and Chad Cromwell on drums with highlights by Larry Carlton on guitar with Eric Darken dding percussion. This CD will be a classic for years to come
Personnel: Chuck Leavell (keyboards); Larry Carlton (guitar); Randall Bramblett, Tim Ries (saxophone); Michael Rhodes (bass guitar); Chad Cromwell (drums); Eric Darken (percussion). Pianist and writer Chuck Leavell has had a long and versatile career, including a stint with the Allman Brothers Band, his own jazz fusion band, Sea Level, and has toured and done session work with the likes of Eric Clapton, George Harrison, and Aretha Franklin, not to mention his long-standing arrangement with the Rolling Stones. He has also written a couple of books, including an influential book on forestry and stewardship, and recorded his own solo albums, of which Southscape is the third (if you count his Christmas album). A light sort of jazz- rock affair, Southscape is intended to be a musical portrait of the American South, and while it isn't exactly a tour de force that makes you smell the kudzu or make you want to eat a peach, it has a pleasant flow and feels comfortably familiar, even on first listen. Working with a rhythm section of Chad Cromwell on drums and Michael Rhodes on bass, and getting added support from sax players Tim Ries and Randall Bramblett (as well as guitarist Larry Carlton on two tracks), Leavell plays strong, ...
