Personnel: Andrew Hill (piano); Andrew Hill. Liner Note Author: Kiyoshi "Boxman" Koyama . Recording information: The Vanguard Studio, New York, NY (05/19/1975-07/31/1975); Vanguard Studios, New York, NY (05/19/1975-07/31/1975). Photographer: Tadayuki Naitoh. While Andrew Hill is best known for his advanced inside/outside compositions and his work with combos, Hommage is a solo piano CD that is among his most accessible. Hill performs Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" and six of his own originals, music that is sometimes episodic and picturesque while swinging in its own fashion. The music is thoughtful, lyrical, and unpredictable, well worth several listens. Hommage is recommended as are virtually all of Andrew Hill's unique and valuable recordings. ~ Scott YanowDown Beat (p.82) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "[The] wistful themes, chromed chords, stammering momentum and odd tangents confirm Hill's singularity, as pianist and musical thinker." JazzTimes (pp.99-100) - "His compositions are jut as knotty and compelling as ever..." Andrew Hill Hommage Songs Hommage Review

Hommage
$13.65 Live at the House of Tribes documents trumpeter Wynton Marsalis performing with his sextet at the intimate community theater space in New York City on December 15, 2002. Apparently an annual ritual of sorts for Marsalis, the performance makes for one of his best live recordings since 1986's stellar Live at Blues Alley. Backed by a slightly altered lineup from his 2005 Blue Note studio debut, The Magic Hour, Marsalis gains first-class support from alto saxophonist Wessel Anderson, pianist Eric Lewis, drummer Joe Farnsworth, bassist Kengo Nakamura, and percussionist Orlando Q. Rodriguez. Special mention must ...

Arrangers: Don Menza; John Kornegay; Tom Matta; Dave Barduhn; Lennie Niehaus; Marty Paich; Bill Holman; Kirk Garrison. Chicago Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra leader Lenny King makes no bones about it. He looks to Stan Kenton and Kenton's great arrangers for his big-band music. The group plays in the style of Kenton not in imitation, but more in admiration. This session features arrangements by Bill Holman, Gene Roland, Willie Maiden, Marty Paich, and Lennie Niehaus. It also includes good orchestrations by members of the band, like trumpeter Kirk Garrison. Whatever they are performing, the CMJO specializes in the same tight, disciplined ensemble work -- listen to "Just Friends," featuring those high-flying solos that ...
