Few countries around the world can brag of a healthier, more diversified heavy metal scene than Greece, whose countless underground groups have transcended the predominant European-derived power and black metal strains to adopt American trends like thrash-core and nu-metal, as well. Modern metal band Bullethole fit perfectly into the latter category, and it's both interesting and ironic that their seemingly more commercially viable direction should actually prove the exception, rather then the rule, in their native country. Not that the group itself tarries over these analytical ruminations for even a second; launching their collective weight into this, their debut album Incarceration, with vicious, enthusiastic abandon. The title track, "Broken Lies, Shattered Alibies" [sic] and "Now I Know" rank among the most obvious standouts of a cohesively strong set; one that is unafraid to expand upon nu-metal's shortsighted vision with astute melodic and harmonic passages, dynamic tempo-jumps, and even the odd bit of thrashing double-kick drums. The hybrid end result is not dissimilar from Sweden's The Haunted, actually, and credit the crunchy but clear production obtained here for allowing Bullethole's thoughtful, if overtly cynical lyrics to shine through the fury as well -- a promising first step for this group's career. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
Bullethole: Costas P (vocals); Antreas Pat (guitar); Leyteris E (drums).

Incarceration CD music
$12.79 This album is a sort of summit conference of underground heavy music. Guitarists and vocalists Scott "Wino" Weinrich (the Obsessed, Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan, the Hidden Hand) and Scott Kelly of Neurosis are grizzled veterans whose hoarse, guttural shouts and instantly recognizable, distorted guitar tones carry the authority of years of hard touring and introspective yet still crushing rock, while bassist Al Cisneros (Sleep, Om) and Melvins drummer Dale Crover shake the earth with their gigantic rhythms. The five tracks were laid down in three days, with some minor overdubs done shortly afterward, and they have the organic feel of jams transformed into cohesive songs through application of the group mind. Wino's usual biker-rock riffage is frequently replaced by a more psychedelic, drifting sound with long sustained notes floating over Cisneros's trance-inducing basslines (Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold" seems like a bigger influence than the Black ...

Incarceration music CDs
$6.79 Also available in a 3-pack with BRITISH STEEL and POINT OF ENTRY.
In the early '80s, a new musical movement, dubbed "The New Wave of British Metal," swept across England. The conspirators include such heavy bands as Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Saxon, and Def Leppard, but Judas Priest is often credited as the originator and leader of the pack. Rob Halford's vocal histrionics and the dual guitar attack of K.K. Downing and Glen Tipton mesmerized metal-heads everywhere. While Priest had been together since the early-'70s, the band's big U.S. breakthrough came with 1982's SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE.
Like most other metal bands that broke through in the early '80s (Motley Crue, Twisted Sister, etc.), Judas Priest took advantage of the then-developing video medium. MTV put the clip for "You Got Another Thing Coming" in heavy rotation, and the song became one of heavy metal's all-time classic anthems. Other album tracks, such as "The Hellion," "Electric Eye," "(Take These) Chains," "Devil's Child," and the title composition, were all prime metal cuts. With its perfect balance of heavy riffing and melodicism, SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE is considered by many to be among the finest heavy metal albums ever made.

$9.89 Frontman Rob Halford has considered this to be Judas Priest's SGT. PEPPER, and it's easy to see why. The album expanded upon the group's debut by tackling a variety of styles, utilizing dynamics to striking effect, and establishing the essential guitar interplay between Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing. "Victim Of Changes" may be forever known for its ...
| | Converge Axe To Fall CD (2009) Digipak
Incarceration album
$12.75 Converge's eighth studio album is packed with guest performances by kindred spirits from Massachusetts and beyond. "Effigy," one of four songs on the album that comes in under the two-minute mark, features Steve Brodsky and Adam McGrath of Cave In on guitar and that group's drummer, J.R. Conners, behind the kit. Uffe Cederlund of Disfear takes over lead guitar on "Wishing Well," while Steve Von Till of Neurosis sings on "Cruel Bloom" and Genghis Tron' Mookie Singerman does guest vocals on the seven-minute album closer, "Wretched World." But it's the core group that delivers the most astonishing displays of hardcore fury and progressive musical exploration on AXE TO FALL. Opening cut "Dark Horse," propelled by a Disfear-esque riff so insane it'll make you think your CD is playing at the wrong speed, kicks off a breathless sprint that lasts all the way to the doomy, noisy fifth track, "Worms Will Feed." It's astonishing that Converge have time to put this much thought into their music instead of just cranking out one more rote album, but AXE TO FALL is a big step forward for them.
