Recording information: Eastwood Scoring Stage, Warner Bros. Arranger: Gennady Loktionov. Clint Eastwood's self-penned score for his Oscar-winning boxing drama, Million Dollar Baby, is as quietly affecting as the film itself. The veteran director/actor/composer has made a career out of saying as little as possible, so it comes as no surprise that his musical aesthetic is one of elegant refinement rather than bombastic sentimentality. Eastwood sets the tone -- and keeps it -- with a simple string quartet and acoustic guitar melody. It's gentle and unobtrusive, but deeply cut with melancholy and despair, perfectly encapsulating the heart-wrenching decision that his character is forced to make midway through the film -- like fellow director/composer John Carpenter, he cares enough about his visual work to see to it that it doesn't get buried by an overwhelming soundtrack. Bits of jazz are sprinkled about, and they give the score a much-needed break from all of the stoic suffering and pre-fight introspection, but it's Eastwood's talent for reading between the lines that shines through the brightest, resulting in a nuanced and powerful blow from one of the genre's most consistent and tenacious fighters. ~ James Christopher Monger Million Dollar Baby Soundtrack Music Million Dollar Baby Soundtrack Music Review Million Dollar Baby Soundtrack CD Purchase Music From Million Dollar Baby CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Mana MTV Unplugged CD (1999)

$7.35 MTV UNPLUGGED was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance. The popular Latin rock band Maná turned off their amps for a special appearance on MTV Unplugged, and this DVD release features the group's acoustic show, along with a few extras for fans. The images have been transferred as shot at full-frame, and the audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo. The group's performance is in Spanish, with no subtitles. The disc features additional behind-the-scenes footage, as well as two additional numbers that were trimmed from the initial broadcast of the show, "Un Lobo Por Tu Amor" and "Me Vale." ~ Mark Deming The unplugged trend of the 1990s could be quite revealing. If a band used amplification to mask its deficiencies, ...

Million Dollar Baby Soundtrack
$12.59 Composer: Hans Zimmer. Since Alan Jay Lerner wrote the libretto for the Broadway musical Camelot in 1960, presentations of the legend of King Arthur and the Round Table have tended to focus, as that version did, on the romantic triangle between Arthur, his queen Guinevere, and the knight Lancelot. Director Antoine Fuqua's 2004 film King Arthur, however, which was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, who is known for big-budget action movies, is more interested in war than love; the three principals are shown on the poster (and cover of the soundtrack CD) in battle garb with weapons in their hands -- even Guinevere, who brandishes a bow and arrow. Prolific composer Hans Zimmer, then, ...
