In a rather sardonic (and probably once-in-a-lifetime) moment of good humor, Despised Icon decided to name their second album Healing Process -- when, in fact, it's anything but. No, these nine examples of technical grindcore constitute an inexorable assault on the senses guaranteed to leave the listener bruised and bloodied -- if generally satisfyingly so. The similarly demanding work of death metal mavens Suffocation and Swedish grindcore experts Nasum (though not quite math-metal freaks like the Dillinger Escape Plan) come immediately to mind when listening to labyrinthine tracks like "Silver Plated Advocate," "As Bridges Burn," and "End This Day," their severely dissonant, nearly atonal riffs only sporadically making room for anything approaching melody. And when these moments do arrive, it's often in the shape of piercing harmonics ("Bulletproof Scales") or rapidly spiraling flurries of notes ("Harvesting the Deceased") -- the only exception being third track "Immaculate," which features a short, truly musical passage easily representing the album's greatest anomaly. Despised Icon do have a knack for keeping things interesting, however, constantly altering tempos throughout (with special kudos going to highlights "Warm Blooded" and the cleverly titled "The Sunset Will Never Charm Us") and coming up with quite a few, very groovy riffs (hear a particularly good set in "Retina"), which add some much needed soul to the predominantly mechanical sounds on display here. Actually, that last bit may prove a cautionary point for fans of more, shall we say, "rough and rustic" grindcore, since all of this clinical precision does sort of detract from the music's spontaneous sense of brutality. And since the band's use of not one but two vocalists (one gurgling, the other barking) fails to transition in any discernible form from their concerts on to tape, Despised Icon obviously still have a few improvements to address with their next effort. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Despised Icon Healing Process Songs Healing Process Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) The Healing Process is killer. How ironic This record is great. I'm not really a fan of hardcore music for the most part but I love the way Despised Icon play their deathcore hybrid style. Great guitar riffs with clever drumming and dual vocals. Sounds good to me anyway.
If you like any bands like Through The Eyes Of The Dead, All Shall Perish, Neuraxis then give this a spin.
Also if you get a chance to see Despised Icon live you should take the time. Well worth it. Submitted by C. Norwood (Toronto, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 3 found this helpful.

Refreshing sound in the world of death metal I just picked up this album the other day after seeing them perform in Atlanta. This band sounds like they have been influenced by Suffocation. The dual vocals work nicely in my opinion. This is brutal metal so the weak should pass this up.;) Submitted by drudow (Lawrenceville, GA USA) Was This Review Helpful? Quite Disappointing I really like the idea of mixing death metal and metalcore. But Despised Icon has not done a good job. To begin, the song structure is really bad - really, really bad. But I give them credit for mixing styles. There are actually 3 different vocal styles on this album. A hardcore scream - not bad. A metalcore roar - pretty good. And 2 types of death metal growls. One of them is great. Similar to old Divine Empire vox. But the other sorry excuse for death metal vocals sounds worse than that crap from Mortician. It has no discernable syllables at all and sounds like a bunch of chains thrown into a wood chipper. Or better yet, it sounds like they found a giant mutant cricket to do some vocals for them. This CD isn't horrible, but it's just a huge disappointment. If DI would just freakin organize some song structure and work on the vocals, they could have potential to be one awesome style-blending band. And that's why I give 3 stars instead of 2 - there is potential. But my CD is going straight to Ebay. It just wasn't worth the purchase. Better luck next time DI. ~~ Submitted by TheRant (D'ville, GA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
Death-core is my new favorite genre Despised Icon's 2nd full length (backed by Century Media) definately destroys their first coming. Mixing and meshing three genres including death metal, grindcore, and hardcore...you have a brilliant crafted album by Despised Icon. There are breakdowns in this piece that'll have you swingin' at your enemies in seconds. This album is breathtaking and quite insane. The two vocalist onslaught adds even more intensity (one guy screams/screetches and roars, while the other handles the death metal growls and sewer emissions) as riffs are blown at you like fired from a .347. If you love the extremes, definately check this band out. This is obvisously their most accessable work to date.
