Everything about this album suggests torpid depression, from the monochromatic album cover photo to the band name and album title to lead singer David Pitzel's flat, affectless drawl of a voice. (Heck, even the label name is gloomy!) Second singer Paul Rauch's hardcore shouts occasionally enliven the proceedings, and at times the band manage to chug the beats per minute up over 100 for a while, but then the album slogs back down into its comfortably numb crawl. These bursts of energy give the album an oddly harsh quality that would be lacking if the songs were merely mid-'90s-style slowcore à la Codeine or Bedhead, but on songs like "Breathe," they feel oddly tacked on, so much so that they're a distraction. Although the majority of The Incredible Sinking Feeling... consists of just exactly the kind of mumbling depression that folks use to deride emo and its fans, the powerful epiphany of closing track "Mute" suggests what would have happened if the band had integrated the album's two musical sides more effectively. ~ Stewart Mason

Incredible Sinking Feeling... album
$11.35 NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other records but channeling these traits through a newly created narrative does have the effect of hearing it in a somewhat new light, shifting the focus entirely to the band's attack, not melody. Still, there's not that much new here -- and the coda of seasonal covers, including the first sober version of "Nutrocker" ever cut, doesn't do much to break that spell. But for those already enchanted by the Orchestra, this will continue to enthrall.

Incredible Sinking Feeling... CD music
$13.39 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one ...

Incredible Sinking Feeling... songs
$15.65 Riding on the back of two of the most spellbinding U.K. hits of 1974-1975, "Imagine Me Imagine You" and "Only You Can," Fox's debut album had a lot to live up to -- and it failed completely. The Fox sound, as spelled out on the singles, was a heavily phased, extraordinarily sultry, low-key glam balladry, awash with vocalist Noosha's exotically accented purr. And the album's opener, a post-coital rendition of the old classic "Love Letters," upheld the promise. Move deeper, though, past the strategically positioned singles, and perhaps there was very good reason for opening the album with a familiar cover version. Without exception, the eight remaining tracks meander lackadaisically around a lyrical thrust that tried to be sensual, sexy, and strange, but read like bad high-school poetry. It's a world inhabited by mysterious jugglers, patient tigers, and Pisces babies, but just when you think it can't get worse, you run across "The More," a post-Desiderata homily that could have been written at the height of the hippy '60s -- and certainly should have been left there. With an instrumental vibe that certainly aspires towards 10cc-esque heights, the musical expertise that distinguished the 45s is, of course, present, while songwriter Kenny Young's production is flawless -- again, the 10cc influence is apparent. The problem is that the best of Fox could be summarized in just the first two songs the world ever heard. The rest should have been saved for Pilot B-sides. They seemed to like 10cc as well. ~ Dave Thompson
