The album MY FUNNY VALENTINE, comprised of delicate, complexly arranged ballads, and one of trumpeter Miles Davis's finest live recordings, is taken from a concert performed on February 12, 1964. Interestingly, the up-tempo numbers from that same concert appear here on FOUR & MORE. Energized by his new, young rhythm section--drummer Tony Williams, bassist Ron Carter, and pianist Herbie Hancock--Davis tears through versions of classics ("So What," "Walkin'," and "Four") at breakneck speed.
Davis's saxophonist at the time was George Coleman, the middleman between John Coltrane (in Davis's first great quintet) and Wayne Shorter (in his second). Though Coleman's name would be eclipsed in the history books, he turns in a stunning performance here, churning through harmonic inventions that approach Coltrane's aesthetic with a lightness and lyricism often missing from Shorter's playing. Davis plays with great vigor, too, moving toward an edgy, aggressive sound that shows the influence of free jazz, especially on "Joshua" and a breathless "Seven Steps to Heaven." Mercurial, dynamic, and technically flawless, FOUR & MORE is an exhilarating set, and a vital addition to the Davis catalogue.

| | Wayne Shorter Night Dreamer CD (1964) Bonus Track; Remastered
Four & More music CDs
$8.15 Shorter's Blue Note debut, NIGHT DREAMER, is a stunning statement from one of the premiere saxophonists and composers in the history of jazz. In 1964, after a long period as musical director for Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and newly joining Miles Davis' quintet, Shorter was primed to enter the field as a major solo artist. His guests include Lee Morgan (trumpet), renewing the outstanding frontline the two formed in Blakey's band, and McCoy Tyner (piano) and Elvin Jones (drums) from Coltrane's legendary quartet. The musical vision here, however, is Shorter's alone.
Shorter's distinctive compositional style begins to take shape with the opening title track, a bouncing waltz with a dusky, modal flavor and a subtle rhythmic drive. Likewise, his arrangement of an "Oriental Folk Song" has a similar burnished tone with beautifully executed harmonies ...
| | Miles Davis Seven Steps To Heaven CD (1963) Remastered
Four & More songs
$7.85 SEVEN STEPS TO HEAVEN finds Miles Davis standing yet again on the fault line between stylistic epochs. In early 1963 pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb left to form their own trio, and Miles was forced to form a new band, which included Memphis tenor player George Coleman and bassist Ron Carter. When Miles next entered the studio in Hollywood, he added local drummer Frank Butler and British studio ace Victor Feldman, who ultimately decided not to go on the road with Davis.
It's easy to see why Miles liked Feldman, who contributed the dancing title tune and "Joshua" to the session. On three mellifluous standards-- particularly a cerebral "Basin Street Blues" and a broken hearted "I Fall In Love Too Easily"--the pianist plays with an elegant refined touch, and the kind of rarefied voicings that suggest Ahmad Jamal. Miles responds with some of his ...
| | Miles Davis 'Round About Midnight CDs (1956) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Special Edition
Four & More album
$16.09 With the release of the spectral title tune, and the efforts of the Columbia marketing and publicity departments behind him, a thirty-year old Miles Davis entered into a period of extraordinary artistic maturity and growth. And Miles instinctively knew how to cultivate his star quality. Looming behind those shades, was the diffident, sensitive anti-hero--proud and defiant--who only spoke to his audience through his horn, and turned his back on them when the other soloists were blowing.
The combination of attitude and intellect was irresistible. Beginning with ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT and proceeding through a remarkable ...

| | Kyosuke Himuro In The Mood CD (2006) (Import) Bonus DVD; Japan
Four & More songs
$52.75 Kyosuke Himuro's In the Mood is a record that sounds better in description than upon actual playing. A successful solo effort by the vocalist of Boowy, the band that most J-rockers of the '90s and 2000s grew up listening to; a return to a harder edged sound after time spent wallowing in ballads; and a moderate attempt to upgrade the sound to the standards of 2006. What's not to like? Turns out, there's quite a lot: for starters, the shadow of the '80s still hangs heavy over the record, and not in a pretty, retro way. Himuro really knows his way around a hard rock riff, which he peppers with solos typical of the period, and he's also able to vary the tempo, mixing some breathers ...
