Biped
$10.89 Selections recorded in Le Château d'Eau, Borges, France; Westleton Church, Suffolk, England; and DAT Studios, Cricklewood, London. One of the two works for which composer Gavin Bryars is best known (the other being "Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet"), his epochal "The Sinking of the Titanic" had been recorded three times in the 25 years since its creation. The first, for Brian Eno's Obscure label, was a landmark recording, but went swiftly out of print and became a much sought after collector's item, while the third, a relatively bland performance on Point, was widely distributed in the late '90s. In between, on the independent Belgian label Les Disques du Crepuscule, Bryars recorded what is possibly the definitive version though again, it is a difficult disc to locate. The composition is an attempt to metaphorically replicate the disaster of 1912 utilizing various elements associated with it, including the songs and hymns reported played on board that evening both before the iceberg was struck and as the ship was sinking. It's structured as an "open" piece, in that material subsequently uncovered may be added and information that becomes discredited may be discarded. The overall mood is, befittingly, sub-aqueous with long sustained tones on the strings, bass clarinet, and horn written to give the impression of sounds traveling great distances beneath the sea. ...
| | Eddie & Ernie Lost Friends CD (2002) (Import) United Kingdom
Biped
$16.95 Two of the undoubted stars of Dave Godin's "Deep Soul Treasures" series finally have an entire CD devoted to their recordings. As DG puts it, "If ever any recording act could lay claim to representing the acme of 'Deep Soul', then Eddie & Ernie would be
Includes recordings originally released on Eastern, Columbia, Buddah, Checker, and Revue. Includes seven previously unreleased tracks. Contains 24 tracks. Includes liner notes by Dave Godin. Liner Note Author: Dave Godin. Recording information: Audio Recorders, Phoenix, AZ (12/15/1966-??/??/1972). Photographers: Dave Godin; Hadley D. Murrell. Arrangers: Robert Banks; Jimmy Oliver. Eddie & Ernie's discography is quite a diaspora, spanning about a decade, 15 singles, almost as many labels, and some releases under names other than Eddie & Ernie. This CD does an admirable job of pulling together 24 tracks (seven of them previously unissued) from their disperse output, forming a good though not great collection of punchy period soul with good harmonizing. It doesn't matter a great deal, but a few of the cuts weren't billed to Eddie & Ernie: there's a 1963 Eddie & Ernie single, both sides of a 1967 single by Ernie Johnson, one side of a 1967 45 by Eddie Campbell, a 1964 side they did under the name the New Bloods, a previously unreleased early-'70s number by their early-'70s group Phoenix Express, and a 1962 single by Little Worley and the Drops on ...

$14.49 | | Manu Katche Neighborhood CD (2006)
Biped
$14.29 Manu Katche became famous thanks to collaborations with Peter Gabriel for "So" and for the Amnesty International World Tour (with Peter Gabriel, Sting or Tracy Chapman). "Neighbourhood" gathers Jan Garbareck, Tomasz Stanko, Marcin Wasilewski and Slawomir Kurkiewicz.
Personnel: Manu Katche (drums, percussion); Manu Katche; Jan Garbarek (saxophone, tenor saxophone); Tomasz Stanko (trumpet); Marcin Wasilewski (piano); Slawomir Kurkiewicz (double bass). Recording information: Rainbow Studio, Oslo, Norway (03/07/2004/03/08/2004). Photographer: Jean Baptiste Mondino. The superb French/Ivory Coast drummer Manu Katche, long a backing force on many ECM sessions, steps out on his own for the first time on this label and comes up with a gem -- with a little help from some of the ECM stars. Indeed, "Neighbourhood" is a very appropriate title, for there are several interlocking orbits of personnel within this album. For a start, the CD marks another collaboration between trumpeter Tomasz Stanko and saxophonist Jan Garbarek, the latter whom Katche has been backing on and off since the early '90s. Moreover Stanko brought along part of his Polish rhythm team, pianist Marcin Wasilewski and bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz, for the session. Michel Petrucciani is clearly on Katche's mind, for not only is the album dedicated to the late pianist, the reflective, ardently ...
| | Jacob Young Sideways CD (2008)
Biped
$15.05 Second album by Norwegian/American guitarist Jacob Young features the working band first heard on "Evening Falls", a group established to reflect the compatible styles and ideas of three generations of Norwegian jazz players.
Personnel: Jacob Young (guitar); Vidar Johansen (bass clarinet, tenor saxophone); Mathias Eick (trumpet); Mats Eilertsen (double bass); Jon Christensen (drums). Recording information: Rainbow Studio, Oslo, Norway (05/2006). Photographer: Colin Eick. A thoroughly modern guitarist, Jacob Young (from Norway) was influenced chiefly by masters Jim Hall and John Abercrombie. Young's style is of the dense, mood-laden fusion variety particular to ECM Records. Recalling the earliest discs from that label by Bill Frisell and John Abercrombie, SIDEWAYS balances absorbing motifs, chilled-out textures, and flowing, probing solos. Trumpeter Mathias Eick evokes the mellow, cerebral styles of Miles Davis and Kenny Wheeler, and ECM vet drummer Jon Christensen is, as expected, perfect. Sideways is another standout ECM release from Norwegian guitarist Jacob Young. Featuring more of Young's atmospheric jazz, the album walks a fine line between melodic, cool-influenced sounds and avant-garde group improvisation. In that sense, Sideways brings to mind some of the work ...
| | Bobby Hutcherson Head On CD (1971) Bonus Tracks
Biped
$10.39 HEAD ON (1971) is the most ambitious and adventurous work in Bobby Hutcherson's discography. Though the composer/bandleader/vibraphonist did contribute one tune ("Mtume"), HEAD ON mostly features the ambitious compositions and arrangements of Todd Cochran, who also plays piano on the session. The resulting music is dense and polyrhythmic, and bracing, drawing parallels to Miles Davis's BITCHES BREW and other first wave fusion albums. Cochran arranges for the 18-piece group here with a mad scientist's zeal but still manages to create precise orchestral textures. Elements of chamber music and funk abound, and Hutcherson's clear, cool marimba and vibraphone work shimmers throughout. This release marks the album's first appearance on CD, giving Hutcherson fans reason to rejoice. Featuring the work of obscure composer/pianist Todd Cochrane, vibraphonist Bobby ...
