| | Ultimate Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Vol. 2 CD Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Discography of CDs
Volume two in Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's Ultimate Collection on the French EMI label not only picks up where volume one left off, but is musically more confident, even further reaching, and seems to take far more chances with very traditional q'waali material. This is Sufi music at its most ecstatic, and is reminiscent of the recordings that appeared later in his life but not the same. This stuff is rawer, far more immediate, and contains no production gloss to make Nusrat sounds palatable to Western audiences. There are six numbers spread over two discs here. All of them are extremely long, and all of them are very intense -- not so much in a way that you have to think about them, because the point is not to think at all, just hear. It doesn't matter what the singer is letting come from his mouth. He is praising the glory of his God in ecstatic terms, in ways that express the most intimate and intense love and devotion. It is at times melodic, and at other times merely off the grid. Like its predecessor, this package contains extra multimedia on each disc for viewing and interacting on your computer. For fans of the later music Nusrat issued, this will be a revelation. If you've only heard about him from your heroes like Jeff Buckley or Eddie Vedder, it's high time you scoped out this music for yourselves because these are the records they heard that blew them away. ~ Thom Jurek
Just like Volume 1, Ultimate Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Vol. 2 is a fantastic collection of Pakistani recordings, this time recorded in 1983 and 1984. At the time, Nusrat was a giant in Pakistan, but his star had yet to rise in the West. The main difference between this and Volume 1 is additional instrumentation on a few tracks. Of course there's harmonium, tabla, handclapping and vocals to which qanoun is added on one track, but there is also what sounds like clarinet and sarod on a couple others. But that's just the supporting cast, the main attraction here is the soaring, ecstatic voice of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. As with Volume 1, the choices here are somewhat arbitrary, but it's all well-recorded and exquisitely performed qawwali music. A bit more annotation as to recording specifics and sources would have been nice, but this is another excellent set of Nusrat's pure qawwali. ~ Sean Westergaard

Ultimate Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Vol. 2
$11.99 Joao Gilberto is perhaps forever destined to be lesser known to casual jazz fans than his occasional collaborator Stan Getz (whose GETZ/GILBERTO albums introduced the United States to bossa nova) and his ex-wife Astrud Gilberto (whose shy, delicate voice made her one of the most distinctive and beloved jazz vocalists of the '60s). However, true fans of Brazilian music recognize that Gilberto is second only to Antonio Carlos Jobim as a writer and interpreter of traditional Brazilian music and Brazilian-influenced jazz.
These two albums, collected in full on one CD, are among Gilberto's best solo albums. Alternating between standards ...
| | Eros Ramazzotti Eros (Italian) CD (1997) Italian
Ultimate Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Vol. 2
$9.05 The Italian version of EROS contains 2 songs that do not appear on the Spanish version. It also contains 8 songs that are completely re-recorded.
At the height of his popularity, after establishing a fan base for himself across much of Western Europe as well as parts of the Spanish-language world, Italian singer/songwriter Eros Ramazzotti took some time off during the late '90s and released Eros, a greatest-hits compilation comprised primarily of newly recorded material. The 16-track compilation is comprised of five songs that appear in their original versions, nine that have been newly recorded specifically for this compilation, and two new ones. While the decision to re-record the majority of the inclusions is unusual for a greatest-hits album, Eros ends up being a much more interesting album than it would have been otherwise. The nine songs that are ...

| | Buddy Holly That'll Be The Day/Remember CD (2002) (Import) United Kingdom
Ultimate Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Vol. 2
$18.79 This disc is an interesting pairing, combining the contents of two LPs from opposite ends of the efforts to tap into Buddy Holly's catalog. That'll Be the Day, released in April of 1958, was Decca Records' first attempt to give a boost to the available Buddy Holly material, assembling 11 of the songs that he'd cut for the label during his four unsuccessful Nashville sessions of 1956 into an LP, issued one month after the Buddy Holly album was issued; Remember, released in 1971, was the last posthumous compilation of Holly's work assembled by British MCA, gathering together the last of his officially released singles, B-sides, and more. Curiously, it is the first 11 songs here, from That'll Be the Day -- which is usually dismissed by critics as not sufficiently representative of Holly's real sound -- that make this CD an important release, very close to essential listening. Those tracks, though a fair distance from the music that made Holly famous, are good, solid, occasionally inspired rock & roll, with a decided rockabilly and country flavor; they're as instructive about how the producers at the major labels -- in this case, Owen Bradley and his assistants at Decca's Nashville studio -- and young artists like Holly, without a lot of studio time under his belt, were finding their way around rock & roll recording. Those 11 sides, which never sounded better than they do here, make this CD a must-own ...
