The question with bands like Spitalfield is always the same: can they grow and mature without losing the edginess and passion that initially attracted their fan base? So far, the answer seems to be yes. Spitalfield's second album for the Victory label does a nice job of balancing enhanced sonics (courtesy of alt rock star producer Ed Rose) and sometimes intricate vocal harmonies with solid, gutsy guitar and straightforward songwriting. Nothing here will offend or disappoint those who fell in love with Remember Right Now, and those for whom this album constitutes an introduction to Spitalfield will almost certainly want to go back and fill in their collections with the group's earlier releases. If Stop Doing Bad Things fails to yield any truly superlative high points, well, maybe that's just another way of saying that Spitalfield is one consistent band. Actually, "Tampa Bum Blues" does pack a distinctive wallop, and "Building a Better City by Design" sort of offers an extra-heavy dose of good fist-pumping fun as well. But none of the other tracks falls far behind those two in quality. Recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

$22.29 Marmalade is often overlooked when lists of the great bands of the '60s British pop scene are compiled. Much like the Tremeloes and Honeybus, two other bands that didn't get much respect, Marmalade was perhaps too poppy and sweet to leave the same lasting impression that the Kinks, Small Faces, and Beatles did. Stop Doing Bad Things album
$12.95 Rock en español continued to move in many different directions after the 21st century arrived. Everything from ska-punk to emo to rap-metal to screamo has been recorded by Spanish-speaking rockers, and anyone who seriously follows the Latin market can tell that Spanish has long since become the world's second most important language for rock music. Mirroring English-language rock, the rock en español field has its share of artists who are hard rocking yet introspective, and one Mexican outfit of the 21st century that pulls off that type of approach notably well is Hummersqueal. Di: Helo, the band's debut album, was not finished overnight; formed in 2000, Hummersqueal started recording this CD in late 2003 and did not finish recording it until early 2006. But Di: Helo was worth waiting for; this is a solid alternative pop/rock effort that strikes a healthy balance between passion and melancholia. Emotionally complex tracks like "Estoy Harto de Ti" ("I'm Sick of You"), "Consequencias" ("Consequences") and "No Me Mires Así" ("Don't Look at Me That Way") do not go for immediacy or the quick fix; Hummersqueal's songs tend to be angular, and there are plenty of nuances in both their lyrics and their melodies (some of which hint at shoegazer music). In fact, one may need to listen to Di: Helo several times in order to fully absorb and appreciate the richness of the material. But the more one listens to this album, the more one realizes how satisfying a contribution Hummersqueal has made to the more introspective side of rock en español. ~ Alex Henderson
The year 2000 not only ushered in the new Millennium. It was also the year Hummersqueal˚ was born. Hummersqueal˚ got together to play their music of choice (ROCK) just because they felt like it. Hummersqueal˚ are: Salvatore Vitale, (guitar) Alfonso Contreras, (drums/vocal) Normand Olea (bass) and Christian Guijosa (guitar/vocals) all natives of Mexico City whose collective mission is simple: to play good/intelligent rock-and-roll about life experiences in the big city, growing up, and love for their generation regardless of language. Inspired by their favorite bands (Pixies, Helmet, Jimmy Eat World among others). The band figured if those guys could do it they sure as hell could too. It’s hard to believe that the band has more than half a decade under its belt since this foursome’s age range is in the barely twenties. To say Hummersqueal˚’s track record is impressive is an understatement. These boys have shared the stage in Mexico with the likes of Audioslave, Misfits Ely Guerra, Amigos Invisibles, Jumbo, Joselo just to name a few. Not to mention Hummersqueal˚ enjoy consistent radio play in the ...
