Personnel: Roland Guerin (upright bass); Roland Guerin (bass instrument); Brice Winston (alto saxophone, tenor saxophone); Quamon Fowler (tenor saxophone); Michael Esneault (piano, organ); Mike Esneault (piano, keyboards); Fred Sanders (organ); John Beverly Jones, Troy Davis (drums); Calvin Veal (percussion); Wessell Anderson (alto saxophone); Jason Marsalis, James Alsanders (drums). Audio Mixer: Roland Guerin. Recording information: True Entertainment Studio; Word Of Mouth Studio, New Orleans, LA. Bassist Roland Guerin's Groove, Swing & Harmony, Vol. II is heaviest on the groove. The music is accessible, melodic, and quite friendly, usually setting appealing grooves. There are a few exceptions to the rhythm section-oriented music. Altoist Wessell Anderson is in fine form on a relaxed and straightforward version of "Alone Together." The opening "I'll Stand Alone" is a strong blow-out, and the closing "Chase N' Morgan" is an unaccompanied bass workout on which Guerin shows what he learned from Milt Hinton. Also quite enjoyable is a revival of "People Make the World Go Round" and a lengthy workout on Wayne Shorter's "Fall." Although nothing that "heavy" occurs, the music is well-played and definitely has its charm. ~ Scott YanowJazzTimes (p.114) - "[T]here aren't many contemporary bassists better at establishing and maintaining a groove than Guerin, master of the slap technique and an equally outstanding accompanist." Daniel Menche has always been one of the most interesting and has frequently been one of the most humane and thoughtful noise artists on the Important Records roster, so it's rather sad to report that this disc is reportedly going to be his final CD release -- future projects will be either vinyl-only or will be films in DVD format with his music as accompaniment. ...
