If you're over 35-years-old, chances are good that you remember Tommy Newsom (if at all) as the tenor saxophonist for the NBC Orchestra during the Johnny Carson years, and as that ensemble's stand-in conductor when Doc Severinsen wasn't around. The running joke on the show was that Newsom was so square -- he'd stand there quietly, hands clasped behind his back, a little smile on his face, while Johnny and Ed poked fun at him for his implacable Midwestern reserve. Those who bought that pose may be surprised by the fiery swing, fierce energy and uncompromising chops that Newsom brings to his recorded work -- there's nothing reticent or modest about his beautifully dancing composition "Titter Pipes" or his sturdily swinging arrangement of the Noël Coward tune "Poor Little Rich Girl." In fact, his arrangements are about as impressive as his playing and that of the rest of his octet -- though the best track of all is probably that wonderful "Titter Pipes," the sole original on what is otherwise a program of standards. The album's only less-than-stellar moment comes at the weak and out-of-tune flute solo on "Cinnamon and Clove." Highly recommended overall. ~ Rick Anderson

Recored at Pomeroy Audio, Brooklyn, New York on January 6, April 30 & September 28, 1998; Make Believe Ballroom Studio, Shokan, New York on February 26, 1998; Clubhouse Recording, GErmantown, New York on October 29, 1998; Baby Monster Studio, New York, New York on January 19, 1999. Includes liner notes by Peter Ecklund. A veteran sit-in cornetist with various Dixieland bands and the backup groups of Leon Redbone, David Bromberg, and more recently Madeleine Peyroux, Ecklund's folk-derived swing is expressed through a variety of different combos on these 15 cuts, eight written by the leader. Some feature dual acoustic guitarists Peyroux and Steve Cardenas, others mandolinist David Grisman and guitarist Frank Vignola, with Marty Grosz (guitar), Dan Block (woodwinds) and Keith Ingham (celeste), or Jay Ungar (violin) and Molly Mason (guitar). Cameos come from clarinetists Ken Peplowski and Bobby Gordon, Howard Johnson (tuba), and Warren Bernhardt (Fender Rhodes). The most focused, centralized group is the Grisman-Vignola band with bassist Murray Wall. They do the delicate, swaying "Winter Waltz," the more intense, ...

Recorded live at the San Francisco jazz club Yoshi's, this two-CD set captures Anthony Braxton's "Ghost Trance" music performed by a sympathetic nonet, comprised of a saxophone sextet plus a rhythm section. Each of the group's members is closely associated with Braxton, so that this performance can be said to accurately portray the structure of the music and the intentions of the composer. The sound is surprisingly clear for a live performance, too. This is very difficult music to listen to at one sitting, and the written saxophone parts can be particularly torturous. Pounding pulses devoid of melody, a somewhat limited tonal palette, and lots of repeating phrases (what the composer calls "repetition") add to the complexity and the opaqueness. Appreciating the theoretical underpinnings of the compositions, some of which are discussed by Steve Day in the liner notes, make it more approachable, and the glorious improvisations by Braxton and his colleagues mitigate the harshness of the whole. Although it is virtually impossible ...
We Loved You
Frank Hewitt We Loved You CD  (2004)

It isn't hard to understand why many jazz musicians who enjoy local hero status in their hometowns choose to stay put instead of moving to New York City. They may not be getting rich playing jazz in Seattle or Boston -- or Milan, Italy, for that matter -- but they reason that it's better to enjoy their hard-won local recognition than to uproot themselves and venture to the Big Apple in search of opportunities that may or may not exist. Besides, having a New York City address isn't necessarily a panacea for jazz artists; there are jazzmen who get lucky breaks living in Oslo, Norway, and there are lifelong New Yorkers like Frank Hewitt who go unrecognized in their hometown. Although the late bop pianist was surrounded by independent jazz labels, he didn't get a chance to make any studio recordings until he was 65 in 2001. Sadly, Hewitt didn't live long enough to see any of those recordings released; he died in 2002, and his first album, We Loved You, was released posthumously on the Smalls label in early 2004. This CD underscores the fact that although Hewitt wasn't overly original, he was a skillful, talented musician who was capable of both sensitivity and intellect. Bill Evans (the ...
