The previously unreleased music on the eighth of nine CDs in the valuable Storyville series features pianist Art Tatum during the last year of his life. He passed away on November 5, 1956 but, on evidence of these performances, he was still playing pretty well near the end of his life. Tatum is heard on the third of his three broadcasts on Steve Allen's Tonight Show and on five radio programs. In three cases he is joined by guitarist Everett Barksdale and bassist Slam Stewart, two of the airchecks have Bill Pemberton in Stewart's place and there are also three unaccompanied solos. There are not any revelations to be heard and, compared to Tatum's many other recordings, this set is not essential. But pick it up anyway, for Art Tatum still plays quite brilliantly while always keeping the melody close by. ~ Scott Yanow
Recording information: 10/03/1955-10/14/1956.
Personnel: Art Tatum (piano); Art Tatum; Slam Stewart (double bass); Everett Barksdale (guitar).
Liner Note Author: Arnold Laubich.

Volume 8: Live 1955-1956 album
$32.85 Art Tatum was one of the most amazing musicians of all time. His technique was phenomenal and he could play lines with both hands so rapidly as to be miraculous. But much more than just a technician, Tatum improvised in a way that was quite futuristic, with his harmonies in the 1930s being 40 years ahead of their time. ...

$15.15 LET IT BE...NAKED contains a FLY ON THE WALL bonus disc including song rehearsals and conversation snatches.
Includes liner notes by Kevin Howlett and interview excerpts with The Beatles
In its original form, LET IT BE signaled the end of an era, closing the book on the Beatles, as well as literally and figuratively marking the end of the '60s. The 1970 release evolved from friction-filled sessions the Beatles intended to be an organic, bare-bones return to their roots. Instead, the endless hours of tapes were eventually handed over to Phil Spector, since neither the ...

$31.55 Storyville's sixth volume in a series of nine Art Tatum compilation CDs explores rare broadcasts that have either appeared previously on obscure, long unavailable LPs, or not at all. Tatum is joined by bassist Slam Stewart and guitarist Everett Barksdale during most of these sessions, which barely reined in Tatum's explosive technique, though Stewart's gimmick of humming ...
