After the death of founding member Johnny Cunningham, the future of this ensemble seemed uncertain. However, newcomer Andre Brunet adds his own unique flair to the fiddle trio's sound. The subtitle, PLAY ON, refers to the group's setbacks. But play on they do. Without a doubt, each piece on CELTIC FIDDLE FESTIVAL is inspired and well wrought. Made up of reel and jig medleys plus contemplative airs, this music breathes with all the heart and soul of ole Eire.
"Arthur Darley's Swedish Jig: Stan Chapman's Jig / Medley" is a superb example of this group in action. A celebratory jig, the fiddles play in perfect harmony. Moreover, Ged Foley's acoustic guitar adds just the right lift. Christian LeMaître's homage to his homeland, "Leaving Brittany," is another highlight. Here, the fiddler's lone violin dances over sparse pizzicato accompaniment and pianissimo guitar chords. "Itzikel" sees the group stepping outside of the Celtic milieu as they play a minor-key Israeli folk song. Even so, the fiddlers do add some Celtic turnarounds to the piece. Overall, a diverse set of music is heard on CELTIC FIDDLE FESTIVAL. Each fiddler gets his moment in the spotlight and the ensemble work is superlative.

This two-CD compilation, assembled from the Walker Brothers' three albums and various singles released by Philips between 1965 and 1967, gives a good overview of their U.K. history without limiting itself to their hits. The sound quality is good if not exceptional -- one gets the sense that another round of remastering would be in order (and while we're talking about sound, wouldn't one like to see a Mobile Fidelity reissue on the Walker Brothers or, for that matter, Scott Walker's best solo stuff?). And the track order isn't chronological -- their two best-known songs, which were not their first two U.K. singles -- occupy the opening two slots on disc one.
