Personnel: Nina Simone (vocals, piano, shaker, tambourine); Nina Simone (harpsichord); Sylvain Marc (vocals, electric bass); Sylvain Marc (vocals, bass guitar); Sydney Thiam, Sydney Thiam (congas, wood block, bells); Paco Sery (timpani, percussion). Audio Remixer: Claude Ermelin. Recording information: Paris, Studio Davout (01/1982). Arranger: Nina Simone. In the 1980s, Nina Simone's recordings, particularly those cut in the studio, tended to be a bit erratic. Fodder on My Wings, which was recorded in Paris, is certainly all over the place, although mostly rewarding. Simone is joined by a rhythm section and occasionally a pair of unidentified horns (trumpet and tenor), an organ, and background singers. The repertoire includes the quiet ballad "Il Y a un Baume a Gilhead," the rollicking "Liberian Calypso," a unique unaccompanied and mostly out-of-tempo interpretation of "Alone Together Naturally," and a brief satirical "Color Is a Beautiful Thing." There are also singalongs, brief throwaways, and aching ballads. Far from flawless, there are enough strong moments to make this set of interest to Nina Simone fans. ~ Scott YanowJazzTimes (p.108) - "At the core of the album is a rare, powerful example of Simone with all masks stripped away: Her personal pain explodes to the surface..." Nina Simone Fodder On My Wings Songs Fodder On My Wings Music Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) A rare gem at last available in full on CD I have read the other review and I could not disagree more with the review.
I bought the vinyl LP in 1982, it has always been a favourite. Sure she does not have the perfect pitch of her Colpix years. However, what you have instead is that raw brand of emotion that only Nina could convey and which she did ever more in her later recordings. The lyrics are personal and heartfelt.
I defy anyone to not be affected by the insight of "There is no returning" the first part of "People en Suisse". (Has similar sentiments to the Bernstein song "Who Am I" from NS & Piano.)
Then there is "Alone again naturally", at last made available. The mixture of regret and invective has never been so graphically portayed by anyone before.
This album is the successor to Baltimore; whilst it lacks the strings and sophistication of the CTI album production - it gains in being "pure" Nina and yes the RCA classic Nina Simone and Piano comes to mind. If you enjoyed that as well as "A Single Woman" , her last studio album - you will be really glad you added this to your collection.
It has aged well since its first release in 1982. Investigate and treasure. Submitted by a_lankester (Exeter, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.
Raw and beautiful I am so grateful that this album has finally made it to CD. The rawness of "Thandewye" and the funky soul of “Vous Etes Seuls, Mais Je Desire Etre Avec Vous” are reason enough to buy the album, there are some weird psychedelic mood swings on here as well, especially "Stop". You get honesty about her feelings at a particular point of her life with "Fodder On My Wings" and "Alone Again, Naturally" where she reworks the Gilbert O'Sullivan song to her own lament about her relationship with her father. Also she sings many songs here in French which makes it quite special. I disagree with the negative review here, especially the comment about Madame Nina Simone if you can get you hands on that rare live recording from 1990 you will hear some songs performed like never before. Nina's voice did begin to get worn in the 90's but this album here is a real timeless treasure from as early as 1982!

Truly Terrible There is a reason this album was never released in the USA - it stinks! If you're used to the wonderful Simone stylings ala "Little Girl Blue", "Forbidden Fruit", "The Amazng Nina Simone" or any of her Colpix or RCA recordings, you'll surely be disappointed if you buy this album. I wasted $13.99 (plus tax) on this drech. Forget about jazz stylings on this album - they don't exist...forget about vocal quality....it's gone...at this stage, Simone's voice -- that warm, emotional tool which she used so effectively in the 60's --- is gone. What she does is shout or talk through all the vocals over synthesized and elevator type music...what this album is, is a sort of funk themed album with a few steel drum beats thrown in...only one or two songs are worth having...take it from this Nina Simone fan...this is one of her worst recordings (in the same category as Madame Nina Simone, her live Montreux jazz festival album from 1990, and Nina live at Vine Street).
