"Su" is the Turkish word for "water," and water is the theme that unifies all of the tracks on this strange and deeply beautiful album. Featuring musical elements and guest musicians from India, Iran, the Balkans, Mediterranean Europe and Britain, as well as Mercan Dede's native Turkey, Su draws on Sufi mysticism for its symbolism and on just about everything else in the world for its melodies and beats. That's not to say that the sound is cluttered or frenetic, though -- there is a deep calm to this music, a consistent beauty that sometimes gives way to eeriness even as jaunty didgeridoos and jazzy breakbeats float in and out of the mix. "Ab-I Nâfi" offers some of the album's funkiest moments, with its thrumming string bass, dubwise production effects and rap interlude (courtesy of Turkish rapper Ceza). "Ab-I Zen" is similarly rhythmically compelling, though in a more laid-back, trip-hoppy way. On the more contemplative side are the beautiful "Ab-I Beka" (which features the wonderful Indian singer Susheela Raman) and "Ab-I Çesm," which is based on a traditional melody from the Kerkuk region of Iraq. This is an album that amply rewards repeated listening. ~ Rick Anderson
Personnel: Susheela Raman (vocals); Ceza (rap vocals); Hugh Marsh (electric violin); Trans Global Underground, Sheema Mukherjee, Dhafer Youssef, Göksel Baktagir, Aukut Sutoglo.

Su album
$19.99 This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files including the video for "California Love."
ALL EYEZ ON ME was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "California Love," featuring Dr. Dre and Roger Troutman, and "How Do U Want It," featuring KC and JoJo, were both nominated for the 1997 Grammy for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group.
This is an enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
The first double-CD of original material by a rap artist, ALL EYEZ ON ME marks 2Pac's return from incarceration to the recording grind. And though Tupac Shakur may have spent the better part of 1995 locked up and battling the system, the album makes it obvious that, rather than degenerating his artistic abilities, the struggles have only elevated his skills. Now, with the backing of West Coast hip-hop's first family, Death Row Records, 2Pac gathers together many of the rap ruling class to celebrate his comeback and give the finger to those who've scrutinized his music and aggravated his existence.
While California has always been his base of operations (he began his career as a member of Oakland's Digital Underground), 2Pac is one of the few '90s rappers ...

Su music CDs
$9.89 UNCLASSIFIED was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Rock Gospel Album. "Squeeze" was nominated for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
Listening to the musical mastery displayed on UNCLASSIFIED, it's hard to believe this is only Robert Randolph's first studio album, arriving on the heels of his in-concert debut record LIVE AT THE WETLANDS. Randolph comes out of the Sacred Steel tradition that mates gospel music with virtuosic pedal steel guitar playing. With the Family Band, he takes that sound a step further by incorporating the jam-band-friendly rock format that's found huge success with live audiences.
By turns funky and bluesy, he ...

$13.09 Vocalist Azam Ali and multi-instrumentalist Loga Ramin Torkian (known for their work with the group Axiom of Choice) and remix producer Carmen Rizzo are the brains behind this visionary world music ensemble. With the assistance of other studio musicians, this self-titled release fuses ancient Middle Eastern musical styles--most notably Persian--with cutting edge electronic sounds.
For example, "In the Shadow of Life" mixes an Iranian melody with droning synthesizers. While this is an ethereal ...

| | Leslie West Blood Of The Sun 1969-1975 CD (1996) (Import) Australia
Su music CDs
$19.99 Although his most famous band, Mountain, has been anthologized more than once, Leslie West had never been given a proper retrospective of his own. Classic rock fans will be thankful that this has been rectified on Blood of the Sun: 1969-75, an Australian compilation that covers West's most prolific period, an era that found him dividing his time between supergroups like Mountain and solo work. His key strengths were his furious electric guitar work and his bluesy vocal rasp, so its no surprises that Blood of the Sun: 1969-75 rocks from start to finish in an old-fashioned style. Accordingly, much of the running time is devoted to West's most successful group, Mountain: "Mississippi Queen" is still as bracing a rocker as it was in 1970, and tracks like "Theme From an Imaginary Western" show off the lyrical (yet still very heavy) side of West's guitar work. Fans will also be pleased to discover that this compilation includes tracks from the artist's hard-to-find records with West Bruce & Laing, including a rare Mick Jagger/Keith Richards rocker entitled "High Roller." The one real problem with this album is that it forgets to include a few crucial tracks: "Long Red," West's finest solo track, and "the Great Train Robbery," one of the Mountain's most thrilling rockers, are the most notable omissions. Despite these problems, Blood of the Sun: 1969-75 is a still a fine introduction to Leslie West's career, and is a compilation guaranteed to please old-school hard rock enthusiasts. ~ Donald A. Guarisco

$11.79 Four years passed since John Wesley Harding's previous long-player, and it seems he spent the time "growing up" a bit, shaking once and for all the image of Elvis Costello's smart-ass kid brother. John Wesley Harding's New Deal (the title presumably referring to his parting of ways with Sire and his new signing to Forward Records) finds a gentler ...
