While in the Make-Up, frontman Ian Svenonius moved from raw garage-rock to arty, dance-inflected post-punk. Svenonius's work in Weird War, and especially on ILLUMINATED BY THE LIGHT, the band's third album, pushes that evolution further still. The sleek, angular tunes here have little of the dirty, grungy swagger of early Make-Up efforts. Instead, Weird War makes music that is light and highly polished, with touches of early-1980s New Wave, post-punk, and funk tied together with a clever, contemporary indie sensibility.
The leadoff track, "Illuminated," works a smooth disco-boogie groove, while the pseudo-Indian "Mental Poisoning" shows a knack for unique hooks. Weird War also incorporates elements of bubble-gum pop, as on the "ooh-ah, ooh-ee" line of "See About Me" and the Lou Reed-like "Crystal Healing." Whether breaking out the acoustic guitar and bongos on "Earth, Mama, Woman, Girl, Child" or unfurling loping dance-floor beats on "Girls Like That," Weird War is intent on having a good time, and ILLUMINATED BY THE LIGHT delivers exactly that.
