Teddy Wilson had a wonderful gift for musical paraphrase and melodic symmetry. His light-fingered approach to the piano made him unparalleled among his peers. Art Tatum was a technical genius, and Earl Hines was a great practitioner of stride piano stylings, but Wilson's subtle and dynamic approach made his brand of swing especially popular among audiences.
This budget CD is made up of two sessions from Wilson's later years. The first 10 tracks were recorded in France in 1976 with a trio consisting of Milt Hinton on double bass and Oliver Jackson on drums, while the final six tracks come from a 1982 concert with the Benny Goodman Quartet. While past their prime, Wilson and Goodman really shine on the latter portion of the disc and Wilson in particular retains the same charm and virtuosity that had made him a jazz icon so many years earlier. Highlights include "Don't Be That Way" played with the trio, and "After You've Gone" played with the Goodman band.
Together with Earl Hines and Art Tatum, Teddy Wilson was a definitive voice in swing piano playing, and a solid and impeccable soloist. It's hard to believe, considering the conflicting fortunes of their comebacks, but East 17 were once the major contenders to steal Take That's boy band crown. Although they didn't clock up as many number ones, they scored an impressive 18 Top 40 hits over a seven-year period, and on the basis of their second greatest-hits collection, time has actually been kinder to the boys from Walthamstow.
