K TOZ the 2004 release by Zouk masters Kassav contains the songs "San Ayen," "Leron," and "Jump," among others.
K toz features Kassav"s zouk founding fathers, Georges Decimus and Jacob Desvarieux, plus all the mainstays except Patrick Saint-Eloi. As usual, the production is first rate. The enormous lineup of Antillean and African churn out tremendous torque here nevertheless. There's also plenty of pulverizing percussion and swing for dancers. Kassav' always manages to reconnect with its drumming roots, gwo ka and zouk's precursor, cadence. They also deftly inject touches of creolized European dance rhythms into the pot. The mix of all these styles and many more went into creating the primal zouk wave. Kassav' is the best at reaffirming all these musical currents that go into the fine mix that is zouk par excellence. The different vocalists' timbre always give Kassav' albums varied textures and feelings. This album doesn't take a ballad breather until the ninth track. The founding fathers can still kick it, and kick they do after 25 or so releases. Highly recommended. ~ Mark Romano

K Toz music CDs
$10.53 Withering blasts from nasally Zurlas and staccato sounding double-headed Davul drums form the foundation of this fine CD. Recorded by Wolf Dietrich throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Gipsy Music of Macedonia & Neighbouring Countries presents over a dozen impressive field recordings. Beginning with dance tunes from Macedonia, this aural expedition mimics the routes taken by the Gypsies, winding its way through the Balkans. Gypsy performers from Kosovo, Greece, Rumania, and Turkey are all heard here. If lively outdoor dance music built upon odd-meter rhythms and trance-inducing melodies sounds ...
| | Francesco De Gregori CD (1974)
K Toz songs
$12.99 This 1974 self-titled Francesco De Gregori release has many points in common with its predecessor, Alice Non Lo Sa. Often called "the Sheep Album" because of its cover, this record was also criticized for its obscurity and failed to produce any hit singles, although -- just as with the previous album -- its first track, "Niente da Capire," would eventually become a De Gregori classic. A wry but still affectionate portrait of a very peculiar ex-lover, "Niente da Capire" also manages to make fun of the accusations of hermeticism leveled at De Gregori, as each stanza features a good serving of surrealistic wordplay and ends with the emphatic title line "There's nothing to understand here." Clearly, the mixed reception of his first work greatly affected De Gregori, as several songs question or mock his own ability to write, in a manner that is sometimes ironic and sometimes self-deprecating, but which also points to a very telling fear of inadequacy or isolation. Not for the first time in his career, De Gregori would struggle with self-confidence. In fact, in a 1980 interview he identified this album as his worst, and mentioned that he should not have released it. Presumably, De Gregori has changed his mind since then and -- like most of his fans -- has reconsidered this album as the hidden treasure of his entire discography. While it is true that the record is bogged down by a few tracks that are simply too rambling, the vast majority of this material is as good as anything he has done. For one thing, the album has a more cohesive sonic identity than Alice Non Lo Sa, replacing the various arrangements of the previous record with a focus on the acoustic guitars parts. Moreover, if the first album occasionally recalled Leonard Cohen, here it is the influence of Bob Dylan that permeates many of the songs. This becomes particularly evident in a running thread of the album, the surreal nightmare song genre that Dylan perfected in pieces like "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" or "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream." Triumph's first worldwide release, Rock & Roll Machine, had managed to capture the attention of many hard rock and heavy metal fans (as well as some borderline prog rock nerds), but still many more remained suspicious of the Canadian power trio's similarities to that country's established elder statesmen, Rush. Thankfully, 1979's Just a Game would see Triumph taking measures (albeit discreet ones) to establish a stronger personality of their own, by relinquishing some of those progressive tendencies in exchange for a generally bluesier, unquestionably rock-based songwriting approach that eventually defined them as slightly heavier foils to their famed countrymen. Another in-house production overseen by bassist, keyboard player, and all-around peacekeeper Mike Levine, Just a Game once again balanced an equal number of compositions from dual lead singers and songwriting forces Rik Emmett (guitar) and Gil Moore (drums). But whereas the squeaky-voiced Emmett was in fine form throughout, delivering two of Triumph's best singles ever in the anthemic "Lay It on the Line" and the irresistibly upbeat "Hold On," before scoring high marks with the majestic title track itself, many of Moore's contributions (including cornball rocker "American Girls" and the passable blues "Young Enough to Cry") suffered from an excess of musical clichés and terribly cheesy lyrics. "Suitcase Blues" had other problems entirely, falling flat on its easy listening face, and sounding more appropriate for the local Holiday Inn lounge than a Triumph LP. To be fair, though, these were simpler times, far removed ...
