With an assortment of titles like "Burma Train," "M'Gambo Mambo," "Bangkok Cockfight," "Dites Moi," "Jamaica Farwell," "Flamingo," and "M'Bira," it's apparent that Denny was trying to be all things to all people here. It is one of his more diverse outings, though, if only for the sheer variety of instruments employed. Say what you will about the cheesiness of this pseudo-world music, Denny deserves some sort of credit for bringing instruments like the m'bira, Burmese gongs, koto, Buddhist prayer bowls, and "primitive log from New Guinea" into the mainstream. They can all be heard on this album, and some of the cuts are among the artist's most rhythmic efforts. The entire LP was paired with its predecessor, Forbidden Island, on a single CD by Scamp in 1996. ~ Richie Unterberger

Primitiva album
$11.99 Joao Gilberto is perhaps forever destined to be lesser known to casual jazz fans than his occasional collaborator Stan Getz (whose GETZ/GILBERTO albums introduced the United States to bossa nova) and his ex-wife Astrud Gilberto (whose shy, delicate voice made her one of the most distinctive and beloved jazz vocalists of the '60s). However, true fans of Brazilian music recognize that Gilberto is second only to Antonio Carlos Jobim as a writer and interpreter of traditional Brazilian music and Brazilian-influenced jazz.
These two albums, collected in full on one CD, are among Gilberto's best solo albums. Alternating between standards like "'S Wonderful" or "Besame Mucho" and Brazilian tunes like Jobim's "Wave" and ...
| | Eros Ramazzotti Eros (Italian) CD (1997) Italian
Primitiva CD music
$9.05 The Italian version of EROS contains 2 songs that do not appear on the Spanish version. It also contains 8 songs that are completely re-recorded.
At the height of his popularity, after establishing a fan base for himself across much of Western Europe as well as parts of the Spanish-language world, Italian singer/songwriter Eros Ramazzotti took some time off during the late '90s and released Eros, a greatest-hits compilation comprised primarily of newly recorded material. The 16-track compilation is comprised of five songs that appear in their original versions, nine that have been newly recorded specifically for this compilation, and two new ones. While the decision to re-record the majority of the inclusions is unusual for a greatest-hits album, Eros ends up being a much more interesting album than it would have been otherwise. The nine songs ...

Primitiva CD music
$14.89 The debut album by the High Kings was issued by the same folks who had a hand in Celtic Woman and Riverdance, and consists of easy listening and buffed-and-polished Irish folk music of appeal to an audience that is comparatively massive for the world music fringe: this album made the lower levels of the Billboard Top 200 album chart. The High Kings is glossy and polite -- targeted perhaps ...

| | Sufi CD (2003)
Primitiva CD music
$16.29 A collection of artists held together by their sect of Islam, with locations far flung from one another, this album deals with music of the Sufis as heard on a number of other ARC albums. As such, it acts a bit as a sampler, but is really more of a simple collection of varied Islamic music. The album opens with a bit of thumri from Abida Parveen out of southern Pakistan. After a relatively short work from Turkey, the usually overlooked Egyptian Sufist movement is given a voice by Sheikh Mohamed al Helbawy, sounding exceptionally like a basic adhan call throughout, but with a powerful voice nonetheless. Another offering from southern Pakistan comes from the Sindhi Music Ensemble, with a vocalist similar to Parveen, although with less force behind her. The master of Pakistani Sufist music follows, as the great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (with Sultan Khan on sarangi as an added treat) performs an old devotional work of Amir Khusrau. A more instrumentally heavy (and more busy, in general) version of qawwali is added in by the Sabri Brothers, finishing the run of Pakistani music for a time. The album's attention then turns to the whirling dervishes of Syria in a traditional ecstatic flute and drum work accompanying the ...
| | Nils Okland Bris CD (2005) (Import) United Kingdom
Primitiva music CDs
$15.59 At a glance, this will appear to be an uncharacteristic release for the Norwegian label Rune Grammofon, as it features absolutely no electronics. Nils Okland is a folk-trained Hardanger fiddler (the Hardanger fiddle is a unique Norwegian violin with sympathetic strings), and harmonium, double bass, and percussion accompany him here. Yet, a single listen explains why labelhead Rune Kristofferson has decided to put this CD out: the overall climate of the album shares a kinship with the likes of Arve Henriksen, Food, Deathprod, and the quiet side of Supersilent. The simplicity and peacefulness of the music found on Bris also deserves comparisons to the U.S. West Coast composers revolving around the Cold Blue Music label (Jim Fox, Rick Cox, and Michael Jon Fink, in particular). Okland is featured solo on about half of the tracks, playing the Hardanger fiddle, viola d'amore, violin, or viola. The harmonium player, Sigbjorn Apeland, percussionists Håkon Morch Stene and Per Oddvar Johansen, and bassist Mats Eilertsen contribute to the other pieces, although rarely all together as a quintet. Some of the music is largely improvised (including the quartet "Flyt") but there are also several compositions originally written for a play. Those include the oppressive "Gjennon" and the delicate title track. A lot has been written about the distinctive mood found in Scandinavian music, but in this case mentioning the endless landscapes, cold weather, and melancholia-laced folk tunes would not be a bunch of clichés. Despite the fact that Okland moves away from folk music on this album (experimenting with low-friction arco playing and free forms, among other things), his pieces -- especially his solos -- remain firmly anchored in that heritage, and that's all for the better, as the result is delightfully ...
