| | Faith Hill Joy To The World CD (2008)
Waratah St. CD music
$11.69 The marketing department at Warner Brothers must have really wanted to get a jump on the holiday season when they released Faith Hill's 2008 Christmas album, JOY TO THE WORLD, in September. Hill's set of carols and traditional songs may not suit the late summer, but that doesn't make JOY TO THE WORLD any less of a treat. As albums like BREATHE and FIREFLIES proved, Hill has no problem crossing over to mainstream audiences, and this Christmas set (the singer's first) ...
| | Hank Williams Revealed: The Unreleased Recordings CDs (2009) DGBK
Waratah St. music CDs
$30.79 1951 was a breakthrough year for Hank Williams. He had a string of moderate country hits already under his belt, but the release that year of his version of an old jazz age novelty tune called "Lovesick Blues" suddenly made him a big star. It also meant his touring schedule increased, but he still found time that year to slip into Nashville and pre-record shows for the Mother's Best Flour Company. These good-natured and intimate performances were cut to acetate discs and then played over the air on Nashville's WSM radio station. Brittle, disposable, and made for only a few plays, these acetates were then shelved and forgotten until they were literally rescued from the trash in the '70s by an alert WSM employee. In all, 72 of these shows survived, containing some 143 songs, and ...

| | Reba Mcentire Moments & Memories CD (1998) Australia; Greatest Hits
Waratah St. songs
$34.29 Released to commemorate Reba McEntire's first tour of Australia, Moments & Memories boasts a generous 20 tracks (including the previously unreleased "I'll Take Your Heart"), but the collection is a little haphazard. That's not to say it isn't a good listen, since it does contain a sampling of her best material, but the compilers took a strange tack in trying to balance her classic '80s hits with healthy excerpts from such late-'90s records as Read My Mind, Starting Over, and What if It's You, where they were just as likely to have an album track as a hit. The end result is a bit of a hodgepodge, but casual fans who aren't really concerned about getting the hits and just want a collection with a lot of songs may find this enjoyable. However, for casual fans, it's probably not worth paying import prices, since there are better domestic compilations that actually concentrate on hits. Similarly, hardcore collectors may find the unreleased cut interesting, but it may not be worth import prices. [The Canadian edition only shares nine songs with the original release, and fills in the other 11 spots with songs from the same time period covered.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Roy C Best Of CD (2003)
$11.69 | | Scott Miller & The Commwealth Upside Downside CD (2003)
Waratah St. album
$15.05 Scott Miller's solo debut, Thus Always to Tyrants, was an ambitious, stylistically diverse set that fully lived up to the promise of his earlier work with the V-Roys, running from pop to hard rock to bluegrass and sounding fiery and convincing at all turns. However, for his second album Miller opted for something a bit less grand, and while he often sounds a lot more relaxed on Upside Downside (so named because it was sequenced to have a rock side and an acoustic side), he also offers up a few throwaways, which wasn't the case on his first outing. "It Didn't Take Too Long" and "Pull Your Load" are wiry rockers that could have been written during a lunch break, and while they're both fun, they don't hold a candle to Thus Always to Tyrants' high points like "Yes I Won't" and "Mess of This Town," while "Chill, Relax, Now" is an ...
