Hanoi Rocks was one of the few '80s-era glam acts to get it right -- basing their sound/approach on the New York Dolls rather than Van Halen. Although singer Michael Monroe found it impossible to carry on with the band after the death of drummer Nicholas "Razzle" Dingley, by the early 21st century he must have had a change of heart. Once more, Monroe was united with guitarist Andy McCoy -- releasing Twelve Shots on the Rocks in 2002 and committing to live dates. The reunion obviously went well, because in 2005 the "new Hanoi Rocks" was ready to issue another studio effort, Another Hostile Takeover. Despite none of the other former Hanoi members being included, Monroe and McCoy have no problem re-creating the trashy glam punk of their earlier releases here, as evidenced by such tracks as the album-opening "Back in Yer Face." Surprisingly, on tracks like "The Devil in You," the group assumes a radio-friendly sound, which is sure to leave longtime fans a bit bewildered. That said, two covers that Monroe/McCoy tackle -- Phil Lynott's "Dear Miss Lonely Hearts" and Stiv Bators' "No Compromise, No Regrets" -- fare much better. Another Hostile Takeover doesn't scale the same heights as, say, Bangkok Shocks, Saigon Shakes, Hanoi Rocks, but there are enough links back to the old-time Hanoi Rocks sound for longtime fans to latch onto. ~ Greg Prato

It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-1985, Live Anthology almost overcompensates for the long wait by offering almost too much music, cherrypicking highlights from 1978 to 2007. It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Unlike the relatively streamlined, retro-soul inflected B'DAY, I AM... is a sprawling two-disc set designed to reflect two conflicting sides of Beyoncé's musical personality. DEL-FI POOL PARTY is a collection of rare and unreleased tracks by Del-Fi artists.
Flotsam from the Del-Fi archives, most likely largely from the early '60s (no dates or supplementary info given in the liner notes). All fifteen of these cuts are new to CD, and two were previously released ("Phone Call," and attributed to "Mystery Artist," and Preston Epps' "Watusi Bongos"). That might make it of some use to gotta-have-everything collectors, and the packaging makes some overtures to the lounge revival crowd. But it's ordinary, if usually energetic, early California rock and pop, often instrumental, and often sounding caught between '50s rock, surf music, and early-'60s television sitcom soundtrack themes. No big names are here, unless you count Preston Epps and future Beach Boy Bruce Johnston, who weighs in with the dispensable dance novelty "Soupy Shuffle Stomp."
