Resilience is at the heart of THE FIRST LADY. Far removed from her days as an alleged pawn in the Notorious B.I.G./2Pac feud, Faith Evans, former R&B queen of the Bad Boy family, has poured herself into a selection of songs with a slight retro bent. On "Mesmerized," she invokes a sassy inflection and swagger over a Johnnie Taylor sample and a chorus of female harmonies, exuding an attitude that's seemingly channeled from Betty Wright.
With a fresh start that includes a move to a different record label (Capitol Records), Evans revisits the requisite testimonial song on the lush, Philly-soul-influenced "Again," which addresses her 2004 drug bust and subsequent stint in rehab. Evans's vulnerability peeks out behind the "Nights over Egypt" sample of "I Don't Need It," as she calmly sings of giving up wealth for more time with her workaholic lover. Chief among Evans's strengths is her forte as a balladeer; witness the uncertainty she hints at amid the give-and-take of the Mario Winans duet "Ever Wonder," and "Hope," an optimistic hip-hop tune that pairs her with Twista.
Japanese pressing of 2005 album features one bonus track, 'Do My Thang'. EMI.Rolling Stone (p.68) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "[H]er voice has a lived-in grace that you don't hear from a lot of competitive wailers on the R&B charts." Entertainment Weekly (No. 814, p.63) - "[F]IRST LADY's finest moments find Evans frolicking in sunnier '70s soul soundscapes..." - Grade: B+ Uncut (p.104) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[With a] gorgeous, updated-Stax sound....Elsewhere, it's all-names-on-deck, with the ubiquitous Neptunes chopping out the neat, female-friendly dance anthem 'Goin' Out'..." | | Melanie Fiona Bridge CD (2009)
First Lady CD music
$9.99 Melanie Fiona's debut single, "Give It to Me Right," was a perfect 2009 pop-R&B recording. The single coupled a timeless classic (the Zombies' "Time of the Season") with roof-raising vocals and infectious pop hooks that stuck like peanut butter. Fiona's single was perfect, albeit a touch formulaic. Because of this, it's no surprise that a large chunk of her debut album, THE BRIDGE, is much of ...

| | Chris Brown Graffiti CD (2009)
First Lady songs
$11.18 Most of Graffiti is a natural progression for Chris Brown. Like many young cred-seeking male singers who have just exited their teenage years, Brown emphasizes womanizing and hedonism and balances it out with a couple clean and empty ballads, as well as a couple relatively lighthearted Europop numbers. A handful of songs deal with his relationship with Rihanna, as well as the fallout from his assault of her. ~ Andy Kellman
Most of Graffiti -- that is, the songs that do not detail what ex-girlfriend Rihanna and the rest of the world have done to him -- is a natural progression for Chris Brown. Like many young cred-seeking male singers who have just exited their teenage years, Brown clumsily emphasizes womanizing and hedonism and balances it out with a couple clean and empty ballads. Out of this portion of the album, only a couple songs leave a lasting impression, and when they do, the ...

First Lady CD music
$8.49 It's been eight long years between Maxwell's third and fourth studio albums. BLACKSUMMERS'NIGHT is the first release of a trilogy, with BLACKSUMMERS'NIGHT(rooted in gospel, with a twist, apparently) and BLACKSUMMERS'NIGHT(promised as a disc of slow jams) to follow. Just as Maxwell arrived in 1996, offering an alternative to the exaggerated masculinity that was dominating contemporary R&B, he returns when ...

| | Neutral Drop Lost Love And Broken Dreams CD (2007)
First Lady music CDs
$10.15 CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (12/21/07) - It was in July of 1975 when Bob Dylan gave Lo-Fi music one of its biggest boosts with the release of The Basement Tapes. The music was real; it was raw and it was an artistic experience. It's been over thirty years and Lo-Fi has another boost coming. However, this time it's not Bob Dylan - this time it is Mike Wilson and Neutral Drop's latest release entitled Lost Love and Broken Dreams. So you long for some relief from today's world of slick and over-polished sounds? Mike Wilson and Neutral Drop have created precisely what you need - aural authenticity wrapped up in lucid and imaginative sound-scapes. Lost Love and Broken Dream, - put simply - is "perfect imperfection." It follows on the heels of the success of Neutral Drop's two prior releases; the self titled Neutral Drop and Falling. Mike Wilson began his journey into the Lo-Fi sound with nothing more than a four-track recorder and a collection of late night recordings. For Wilson, the magic is blending genres of Industrial, Folk, and Rock into sound-scapes within the Lo-Fi paradigm. Wilson, who is the main songwriter on most of the tracks, has a knack for capturing creativity in ways most other artists wouldn't even dare attempt. He attributes some of this to pure stubbornness. Wilson says, "I have had more than a few times when people have told me you can't do such and such in a recording, only to come back a few days later and ask me how I did it!" With ten new tracks, Lost Love and Broken Dreams draws a lot from the real life experiences of Wilson. The album reflects his interest in the Goth scene while growing up in Chicago, and is the reason ...
