Following up the BLUE COLLAR COMEDY TOUR (which also featured Ron White, Jeff Foxworthy, and Bill Engvall), Larry the Cable Guy presents THE RIGHT TO BARE ARMS, his third solo outing. This disc clearly distinguishes the burly comic with the trucker's cap and bulging biceps, since unlike his compatriots, LCG isn't afraid to identify himself as a proud right-leaning son of the South, often taking potshots at easy lefty targets like Michael Moore and Oprah Winfrey.
But rather than come off as a raging conservative, Larry plays into the "good ol' boy" stereotype, using his catch phrase "Git-R-Done!" to profess his love of auto racing ("NASCAR"), a certain racy food chain ("Hooters and Hooters Airlines"), and other redneck-related topics. And while his take on the culture wars finds him lambasting political correctness ("The Right to Bare Arms!"), this joke-telling preacher's son also gets his whacks in with crooked ministers ("Faith Healers and Weight Problems"). Larry the Cable Guy's appeal boils down to his willingness to not just laugh at his kinfolk ("Family in Sanford"), but at himself ("Shavin', Waxin', Primpin' and Shootin' Quail! [This Is Funny, I Don't Care Who Ya Are!]"), making him quite the populist standup.

BEAT CAFE is UK troubadour Donovan's first adult album of the 21st century (he released a kids' album in 2002), its predecessor being the '96 Rick Rubin-produced acoustic record SUTRAS. Where the latter was strictly a solo affair, full of hushed spirituality, BEAT CAFE is a group effort that bears a markedly more sensual, rhythmic tone closer to Donovan's '68 hit "Barabajagal." As the title implies, there's a loose sonic concept at work; undertones of beatnik jazz/blues simmer beneath many of the tunes, most explicitly the title track, which bears echoes of SUNSHINE SUPERMAN's "Bert's Blues."
There's an organic, spontaneous feel to the mostly acoustic arrangements. Donovan is accompanied only by famed British folk-rock bassist Danny Thompson (Nick Drake, Pentangle) and American drumming deity Jim Keltner, with occasional keyboards from producer John Chelew. Utilizing such sympathetic musicians in a spare, intimate setting helps make BEAT CAFE an album that lives up to this famed singer/songwriter's legacy.
That shimmering, intimate voice . . . the poetic, seductive lyrics . . . the dreamy, hazy music that surrounds them . . . From folksinger to flower-child to timeless musical poet, Donovan and his distinctive, magical songs have become familiar to decades of music fans since the early Sixties through hit singles like "Mellow Yellow," "Sunshine Superman," "The Hurdy Gurdy Man," "Catch the Wind," "Colours" and "Atlantis," through jam-band covers by the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers ("There is a Mountain"), in TV and movie soundtracks and commercials, and on a precious, infrequent trickle of new releases."Beat Café" is the first new Donovan CD for grown-ups since 1996's "Sutras" ("The Pied Piper," a children's CD, was issued in 2002).
