The most adventurous quartet in contemporary jazz has met its visual match in Peter Max, the legendary pop artist who, as it turns out, is a huge fan of the band. Russell Ferrante and company could probably feel at home naming any of their innovative, loose-spirited albums after one of Max's paintings, but Altered State definitely fits the vibe here -- which is all odd meters, emotionally provocative melodic lines, and unexpected harmonies. Max, in turn, took a few preliminary tracks and was inspired to create the cool, splotchy cover art. The hourlong musical affair won't cause any permanent mental and emotional departures, but there are a lot of odd and spirited surprises along the way. "Suite 15," featuring the funky interplay of Bob Mintzer's aggressive sax and Ferrante's power chording (not to mention one of Ferrante's classic lush piano solos), is classic Jackets stuff all the way. They almost go "pop" on Mintzer's multi-genre romp "March Majestic," which is driven by drummer Marcus Baylor's New Orleans-styled march beat, Ferrante's gospel-tinged keys, and -- big shock -- Mintzer's ace soloing throughout. The spiritual centerpiece of the disc is "The Hope," a churchgoing gem featuring Jean Baylor on lead vocals and the Perry Sisters backing. Running from the fellowship hall, the quartet goes alternately fun and jazzy and then weird and wild, from Ferrante's dark, brooding, and gently exotic "Hunter's Point" to bassist Jimmy Haslip's simmering and offbeat "Youth Eternal." Marcus Baylor has a blast taking listeners into a dense percussive forest at the beginning of "Free Day," which develops into a fairly straightforward midtempo jazz number. Ferrante explains that this project was about finding some less-traveled roads. But even on those, the band can't get away from the powerful risk-taking and solid playing that make the Yellowjackets treasures in their chosen genre. ~ Jonathan Widran

| Altered State Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Another masterpiece from the Jackets The "Jackets" are like endangered species, they need to be protected! They are the most stable group in such a dynamic "electric-jazz scene", with the Haslip-Ferrante's synergy still amazing us after 25 years. Joined by one of the most gifted sax/clarinet player and composer, Bob Mintzer, and by a fantastic emerging talent sitting behind the drums, Marcus Baylor (fine composer, too), they are like a spring of music. Their music can be enjoyed by everyone, it's not music for musicians only, as it happens frequently in the jazz scene. Thanks, Jackets, thanks from my heart! Best Group Today How can you fault the group that refuses to come down from its lofty perch of interesting spiritual luscious improvizational heavenly treedom? No boring cliche pop jazz here. Only the best music from the best musicians! Thank you Bob, Russell, Jimmy and Marcus for pushing the listeners' ears to new heights only dreamed of by lesser players! | | Frank Mantooth Miracle CD (1999)
Altered State songs
$13.15 An excellent big-band album from Frank Mantooth that gets off to a stirring start with a Diane Schuur/Kevin Mahogany duet. There's more scatting than words on this cut, which Mahogany is clearly much more comfortable with than Schuur. Mantooth uses three sets of musicians in differing combinations, but they all work well together. To say that Mantooth is influenced by Stan Kenton is an understatement -- Mantooth's timing, tempos, dynamics, disciplined ensemble work, and arrangements (which sometimes slip into a quasi-symphonic mode) vividly recall Kenton at his very best. Also, like Kenton, the band features outstanding solo work. Kirk Garrison's Maynard Ferguson-like trumpet takes the lead on "Guarujį" and Bobby Shew's horn follows suit on Henry Mancini's "Dreamsville." "Beyond the Sea" has forceful musical statements by Art Davis on trumpet, Pat LaBarbera on tenor, and Paul McKee on trombone. "Thou Swell," done with a taste of Latin beat, is the solo vehicle for veteran tenor player Pete Christlieb, where he shares the stage with Bobby Shew. "Limehouse Blues" opens with a long guitar solo by Danny Embrey before segueing into a rousing rendition of this longtime barn burner. Unlike his previous albums, Mantooth provides more space for vocalists. In addition to their duet on the first ...
| | Shakira Laundry Service CD (2001)
Altered State album
$8.49 Though she was already a star in the Latin pop world, Shakira broke through to the international mainstream in 1998 with DONDE ESTAN LOS LADRONES, followed up by a live UNPLUGGED album. Thus, her next studio effort, 2001's LAUNDRY SERVICE, played a pivotal role in the budding pop diva's career. Not one to disappoint, Shakira made LAUNDRY SERVICE a career milestone. As such, the album earned a 2002 reissue where it was ...

Altered State CD music
$16.09 Recorded between 1957 & 1993. Includes liner notes by David Nathan.
In appearance, this two-disc anthology would seem to be an exercise in hearse chasing, issued just months after the great singer's death. In reality, no matter what the intention of the record label, this anthology accomplishes what virtually every other attempt failed miserably to do: definitively represent all the stages of Simone's career. While RCA has done a number of fine Simone collections, including The Very Best of Nina Simone: Sugar in My Bowl 1967-1972, which featured a number of unreleased tracks, even they haven't accomplished this: a double-disc set that encompasses her entire career with recordings from every label she recorded for, including Bethlehem, ...
