Some fans consider this the Persuasions' best album, which may or may not be the case, but there's no doubt that it's among their most varied and ambitious. The centerpiece (and one of the group's few self-penned songs) is "Women and Drinkin'" a cautionary epic (nearly seven minutes long) about fast living, based around a riff from Parliament's "I Just Want to Testify." Other highlights include a great version of Tony Joe White's "Willie and Laura Mae Jones" (neatly reversing the original's sexual and racial politics), a beautiful take on the doo-wop revival classic "Looking for an Echo,' and a hilarious run through of the Rivingtons' novelty rocker "Papa Oom Mow Mow."
The Persuasions: Jerry Lawson, Joseph Russell, Jimmy Hayes and Herbert Tubo Rhoad (vocals).

Jerry Lawson Speaks Rolling Stone was so wrong about this album. My most ambitious & eclectic album & divinely guided is my self produced masterpiece Jerry Lawson Talk of The Town (2007) There's nothing like it in the entire music industry. 20 tracks, an hour of music & a 20 page booklet. Covering The Dixie Chicks, Shania Twain, Randy Newman, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Dolly Parton, Billy Joel, Billy Vera, The Pointer Sisters & many more. I listen to it every day & still can't believe it. Submitted by mail (Scottsdale, AZ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Dr John Gumbo CD (1972)
Chirpin' CD music
$9.09 After a series of albums which presented a unique mix of voodoo exotica and southern Louisiana funk grooves, Dr. John turned his sights on the rich heritage that informed his vision. The resultant GUMBO is a complete winner from start to finish.
Opening with "Iko Iko," which dates from the early '50s, he celebrates many of the prime musical influences of his youth in New Orleans; standards from the Crescent City songbook, with nods to key players such as Professor Longhair, Lee Allen, Huey Smith, and Earl King. He even records his own 1960 tune "Somebody Changed the Lock," as well as "Mess Around" by Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun (originally written for and recorded by Ray Charles). Produced by the complementary team of Jerry Wexler and New Orleans' own Harold Battiste, the music is rife with potent grooves ...

| | Urban Mystic Ghetto Revelations CD (2004) Edited
Chirpin' CD music
$11.49 For his debut album, Urban Mystic works his way through 14 generally impressive songs, all of which have their own attributes and a few of which are absolutely wonderful. Titled Ghetto Revelations, the album is clearly an exercise in contemporary R&B, though it's a bit out of the ordinary. Urban Mystic sure sings like an R&B singer, and well at that, but his lyrics have perhaps more in common with his rap peers than the likes of Usher, Anthony Hamilton, and Mario. If this doesn't seem apparent right away, it certainly will once you hit the sixth song: "Fuck Song." Yup, Urban Mystic is often quite frank in his language, not unlike R. Kelly at times (unambiguous songs like "Feelin' on Yo Booty" and "Down Low" come to mind). Not to overstate the sexual content of Ghetto Revelations, though. It's actually quite varied in subject matter, unlike a great many contemporary R&B albums, which are often all about sex, albeit often shrouded in allusive rhetoric. "Where Were You," one of the few absolutely wonderful songs that kick off the album in grand fashion, is a better gauge of what's on Urban Mystic's mind in general: it's a heartfelt song that celebrates many of the commonalities shared by urban Americans, from remembrances of 2Pac's and Biggie's deaths to more personal remembrances, like where you were when you first rode in a Benz. Clearly, ...

| | Moby Grape Truly Fine Citizen CD (1969)
Chirpin' album
$14.49 1969's Truly Fine Citizen was the last gasp for the original incarnation of Moby Grape. The departures of guitarist Skip Spence and bassist Bob Mosley had reduced the once-mighty band to a trio, and sessionman Bob Moore had to be brought in to fill out the lineup. Columbia Records decided Moby Grape needed a break from producer and studio collaborator David Rubinson, and they were sent to Nashville to record with Bob Johnston, best known for his work with Bob Dylan. Johnston reportedly began the sessions by announcing the album had to be recorded in a mere three days, and if the musicians didn't like it they were free to leave. And Moby Grape were in the midst of an ugly legal dispute with their manager that resulted in most of the songs on the album being credited to Tom Dell'ara, their road manager. Given all this, it's a pleasant surprise that Truly Fine Citizen isn't a disaster -- it's a loose but amiable set of sunny psychedelic pop-rock with a decided country influence. Guitarists Peter Lewis and Jerry Miller had already shown their country ...
